No worries, I think he didn't bother with any software and instead had the info on a hard drive because he wanted to do the "tree" by hand. I can find out for you if you like?

When my granddad started he checked church records and just asked around the family for old photos and information. you can they try Kew records ( natrional archives )and local records offices im not sure what software he used, and most of the info he got was free, he said it wasn't worth paying for the online sites to fine these things out.

been doing a bit of reading and they seemed to come in 5,10,20 mark coins, but i'm intrigued to know if anyone has had experience with them

I have been watching Monty Halls, I know he is a bit of a knob ( to put it politely) but he was talking about gold german Marks, What did he mean by that, are/were there golden German marks. this is pre 1918 FYI.

Yeah, you do need to watch out for salt air. Silica gel is fine for moisture (though you need to chase the moisture out of them at regular intervals), but I'm not sure what you should do about the salt air. But if you're not right by the sea, it's probably much less of a factor. I'm about 100m from the sea front, blocked by another row of houses but still the proximity doesn't help. I have picked up silver and gold from under the sea with little effect on the piece ( though they were never going to be F/GF coins) its the copper and other "rust-able" items that i was thinking about?

they aren't in a moist environment the house is quite dry, but there is no extra anti moisture stuff in their storage cases. I had considered at some point adding silica gel packets around the containers but wasn't sure if they were stable enough to do so. Then again there is quite a bit of salt in the air around Plymouth so... well I don't know :?

I live very close to the sea ( lucky me right :/ ) and with a lot of posts recently about toning and "the dreaded verd" I was wondering whether or not people had any thought and information on the effects living by the sea would have on toning ect of the coins?

Possibly, but surely you could quite easily get a hold of the software and create your own stand ect with a better camera ( again for £40 it could still be worth a try)

Most mobile phones nowadays have more than 3MB, When photographing anything I personally would prefer the higher resolution. I do quite a bit of microscopic photography and with that I use a 20MB camera, obviously over what you need for a coin but somewhere around 10 would be the best for me.

It doesn't look too bad, but like David said I think it would be better with higher resolution. Also it doesn't mention windows 8 compatibility...
