When you mentioned treasure hunter, south coast, and association in the same breath, I assumed you meant the 'Association' wreck!Oh, dear! Its quite possible, He mentioned them in the video I posted the other day, the coins he had we mostly cobs, but a few properly minted ones too

W3 = William III G3 = George III Coinery = Stuart Azda = Dave There was a famous shipwreck (The Association) which had a huge quantity on board when it sank, including much Charles II (of England) and pieces of 8 Ah I see, threw me a second then, seems simple now you mention it Asumel is an anagram - easy to use for forum stuff ect, Samuel/Sam is my real name I didn't realise it was a ship he was referring to, I thought it was, as the name suggests an Association.

I was thinking that, Looking through some of the info and shops, I'm not one to rush into a purchase, especially one that looks to be quite costly.

I have to say its all rather interesting Does anyone know of anywhere which would sell them, somewhere I wouldn't be stuck with a fake. Otherwise I may have to start taking a metal detector down with me when I go diving and risk life and limb to find one

Yeh I have just googled 8 Reales and the first hit was a warning about fakes, may have to be a bit cautious and do a bit of research first

I was watching Pirates of the Caribbean again with a few friends today and I was wondering what coin the Pieces of 8 actually are? Ray Ives a treasure hunter in Plymouth called them coins from the association, not really sure what that is still

I have a cannon 350D which is a good basic DSLR camera and works ok for pretty much anything, the lenses are quite cheep ( in comparison) so a good macro one would could do quite a decent job, though I get a good picture from it without a macro lens.

Hey Guys, As a few of you will already know ( those who have had the saintly patience to answer my questions) I'm starting to expand my current collection. To keep a track of it I currently use Microsoft Access and find that it is ok, does anyone have any recommendations on beginner software, or is Access good enough? Thanks

I am currently keeping my collection in a mixture of containers, a binder with coin sleeves, though I am now worried about leeching plastic? ( read about it on the internet :/ ), a Small Tin which contains the majority, and ones purchased from the mint+ Westminster coll' in their cases. For grading perhaps Derek's (who is a member here) book might be of interest?: The Standard Guide to Grading British Coins The only other thing I'd mention is that buying directly from the RM and companies like Westminster can be expensive. Very often their products can be picked up later on ebay for less. And of course, there may be less of a market for such things if ever you want to sell than for coins meant for circulation. If you like them, that's fine. But they aren't a money-maker. Except for the mints that make them in the first place of course! Thanks for the advice I will take a look at the book I'm not really looking to make any money out of this, I enjoy collecting these beautiful pieces of art, but because of my inexperience the mint and Westminster were safe purchaces.

Blimy, I have read the "good Dealers" post and wished I had seen It before I posted as I can now see cautions other members may have! I would Just like to say that this post was not meant to ruin reputations etc. and was a genuine question from someone relatively new to this :/

Thanks for the advice, I do realise now that I probably should have given a little bit more in the way of background and my likes. Collecting really started when I was younger and my dad was moving to different country's and going on tour with the Air Force so a lot of my coins are probably still in circulation, bar those from Europe- pre Euro. When my nan passed away I inherited my Granddads collection, again from when he was in the Army, so the majority of his coins are from British colonies and nothing really older than the mid 1800's, Grandparents. I have been collecting British military coins from the Mint and Westminster collection but lately I have been interested in older British coins mainly because I find them fascinating. I have read a few books on coins and have a relatively good grasp but little/no experience on coin grading , and thus the reason for asking my question, as I would rather get advice before I start to branch out just to be on the safe side. Thanks
