It looks like a scan to me and they can tend to look a bit rougher than photos.

I think you would need to post up photos for members to comment on this properly. Although we didn't go decimal until 1971 I think that there were lots of proof coins struck with the 1970 date.

Yes I think most of the siver Victorian coins were in the 180 degree alighnment until 1887 when they changed to the same way up for both sides.I say most because I thing there is one that coin - groat? - that is different. Sorry to disappoint you, but still if it has a hole in it it was at least treasured by somebody once.

It's a penny Bagerap I have one of those 1911 "types" too. There seem to be quite a few on Ebay at the moment. I wonder if you can tell an individual maker from the way it has been cut here and here Strange how they all seem to be the same year...

I'm not usually a big fan of cut out coins, but this one is well designed and executed. I managed to get all the white "crud" off with a cocktail stick!

Thanks chaps for your replies. So there could be the potential to publish the first definitive study (and high grade collection) on die numbers and rarities for someone out there then! I wouldn’t have any interest in this myself, however given that some collectors collect what would be considered to be minute and often hard to distinguish variety changes, I am surprised that it hasn’t happen yet. I do find die numbers useful for helping identifying the various reverses as shown in Davies mind!

I often see Victorian shillings listed as having “rare†die numbers. How is this known? Are there recordings of the numbers of die numbers produced for each year somewhere? Does the rarity of a number have much effect on the value or is this just another Ebay hype?

Is there any significance to the direction in which Britannia faces?
