I honestly don't get it, Mark? Elizabeth I turned out some sharper milled coins 450 years ago!

Toast anyone? It does seem to be another lazy design. What ever happened to the fine detail we used to find on farthings, and the even smaller denominations of the early 20th century? Has all our advances in technology made it harder, rather than easier, to emulate the artwork of times past?

We are talking at crossed purposes, Stuart. Dave's post references an 1862 florin, which is what I replied about. I agree with you, if we are talking godless 1849 florin. Oooooops, sorry Nick et al. God only knows how I crossed threads with that. I was recently reading the other godless thread, and just jumped to all kinds of fancy conclusions re this one!I humbly backtrack to my waterway hole!

I have to say, that hasn't been my experience! Maybe they've got harder at the same time the gothic crown moved out of reach, I don't know, I'm pretty out of touch at the moment?I had a PCGS one for sale for ages...nearly gave it away to Japan in the end! Had an obliterated ww that didn't go anywhere fast, either.

It looks like it's spent some time in water, sea or river, as it's rather smoothed? Also, without seeing the other side, there looks to be a plugged edge-hole at 9 O'clock? Nice bit of history, but not a collector's piece if there are better examples around for a few extra quid. Thanks for bringing it on here, though! Talking of Edwards, I was staggered to find a beautiful tomb in Gloucester Cathedral last week, which belongs to Edward II. I instantly wanted to collect Edward II coins, just to build on the sense of history I felt, standing before this king's burial spot! Amazing!

I totally agree with your last sentence. However, I can't follow the idea that a weakly struck coin, fresh out of the mint, couldn't attract the truth of its status as UNC?

Not true! I think it's very high grade with faults! If somebody advertised that as GEF (maybe even AU) with weak strike and a couple of detracting marks, I'd say their statement would be fair! CGS seem to have forgotten to factor the issues into their numerical stamp! But we all know why, don't we?
