  1. I wanted to buy them in singles for my shilling, but I thought I could only buy in lots of 10!
  2. Not even the usual "georgius v" but EDWARD V!
  3. I thought there was just one master die, which the engraver made, and the rest were just cast from it?
  4. An Athenian Owl, what HPJ and Syl were talking about
  5. I've also noticed this. About a week ago I logged on and there were no posts at six o'clock! With the winter months drawing ever closer, I'm sure the post counts shall rise exponentially
  6. It's nothing to do with "trusting" eBay - it's the sellers in whom you must place your trust. They have given high definition photographs and you should grade the coin yourself, and only use the grade they give as a guide. Also, there is no reason not to trust a person with so high a feedback rating. I know nothing on Roman coins, so I don't even know if EF can be applied, but it looks in stunning condition. Also, it looks like it was previously gilded, as there are hints of gold around the obverse edge beading, between 9 and 12 o'clock. The figure on the reverse also has a gold haze around the edges. Buy it if you like it!
  7. Farthing is thought to be a contraction of "four-thing" i.e 1/4 of a penny.
  8. Yeah, that's the only Charlotte I could think of too.
  9. Princess Charlotte was the heir presumptive of Great Britain, and the only child of George IV and Caroline. Her parents' relationship was quite frosty and she was born during their brief union, after which they were never reconciled. After the separation, she was rarely allowed to see her mother. Princess Charlotte was arranged to be married to the Prince of Orange, heir to the Dutch throne, but broke the agreement after hearing of his "colourful" escapades at Ascot. She married Leopold of Saxe-Coburg. The Prince Regent (George IV) hated the marriage because he had always wanted the Prince of Orange for a son-in-law. The Princess died in childbirth, giving birth to a stillborn (Leopold's child) at the age of 21.
  10. Rocking horse droppings - what a wonderful phrase
  11. Is there any news on this?
  12. I wouldn't go up to 1970. When I used to collect farthings, I started at 1956 and they just held nothing for me - I should have started at George V. Perhaps it was the uber-lustre or the wrens on them, I don't know, but they just didn't appeal.
  13. Congratulations - now all you have to do is fill it!
  14. Ho hum we shall have to see a photo
  15. There were no 1822 shillings or 1717 crowns - what's your point?
  16. I saw that article in the saturday papers, I thought it was old news! JMD, the world record is $7,300,000 for a 1933 Double Eagle. Edit: It's expected to sell for £150,000 on 6th October at Spink's. The current record for a gold penny is £149,500 for a Henry III piece. British record for a coin is £170,000 for a George III crown.
  17. Page 2: "Thank-you" doesn't need to be hyphenated, but "all new" does. Abrupt spelled wrong. "Nations" should have an apostrophe before the s. Page 3: Ascending spelled wrong (twice). In the reference numbers part, referred is spelled wrong (also twice). Page 5: Marketing section - Precise spelled wrong. Also, do away with the his/her he/she and just keep his/he. Cleaning - Abrasive only has one b. Page 46: Dei Gratia is "By the Grace of God". Page 47: Difference is spelled with only one "f". Also, "Extremely" in "Extremely rare" doesn't need to be capitalised. Page 55: You explain what Ind Imp means in parentheses, but earlier when BRITT.OMN is stated as being discontinued, you don't explain what it is. Page 64: "Carthweelesque" should be "Cartwheelesque". That's it! Edit: Acrobat downloaded especially for you!
  18. Correct - the Queen wanted emblems of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales on her Coronation dress. She chose Rose, Thistle, Shamrock but uh-oh, a leek doesn't really fit in with those pretty flowers, so they chose the daffodil instead.
  19. That's in super condition under the staining, but it will devalue it significantly. I suppose it could be removed with a cleaner of some type, but that would probably upset the tone of the coin.
  20. Silver hallmarks call the marks "Lion rampant/guardant" (I think) for English silver, so the lions/leopards are probably lions. JMD, the national Welsh plant is the leek.
  21. Hotmail is expanding everything soon or it may be right now, I can't remember. The inbox size is being upgraded to something ridiculous and attachments can be up to 20MB.
  22. Lovely piece of gold and in far better condition than I anticipated. But then again, I'm useless with hammered!
