  1. Lovely Jaguars, Moneyer! I too like my classic cars Amongst other things, I also have a few old penny slot machines. Here's three of them:
  2. Steve if I had that sort of spare cash lying around I would probably spend £42k on wine, women and gambling, then just waste the £500 that was left over And waste the rest on wine and women Gambling is for mugs. Wine & coins are investments, but women are a depreciating asset
  3. A stunning coin, but... £42,500 (where did he get the odd £500 from?). Only a 'handful' known too. If you bought it, you'd want that to be a very small handful or every Tom, Dick & Harry might find one!
  4. Watching the news about Greece tonight, meltdown (or partial meltdown) is a real possibility. Cash isn't King anymore. Best invest in physical assets with a naturally limited supply. Land, property, gold all sound good.
  5. I wasn't talking about this country's politics, or what the Labour Party stands for, or even the 'capitalist system'. I'm talking about the international fantasy that is the banking system, based on nothing that's real, nothing that's produced by real people, just a conspiracy to dream up new ways to make money (mostly on paper) without let or hindrance, or answerable to a single bloody politician anywhere. OTM. Your money. My money. I have to say, I pretty much agree with both of you. And no, that's not a contradiction. Add in my extreme dislike of our slide towards a Big Brother state and that about covers everything! P.s. careful with the 'OTM' reference though Peckris. Remember, "The trouble with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money"
  6. Just spent some time going through all the pennies listed and, with one exception, found that only the copper coins really interest me this time around. The top grade early Victorian bronze seems rather sparse, unfortunately.
  7. It doesn't really affect me as I don't tend to sell, but I read about it earlier. Another example of the Big Brother state running a coach and horses through our privacy. The Daily Mail reports: Ebay and Amazon have been ordered to surrender tens of thousands of members’ details to the taxman as part of a crackdown on online trading. HM Revenue and Customs has issued legal notices asking for the data, including names and email addresses. Companies that do not comply promptly could be fined £300, with an additional £60 per day if they fail to respond by the end of the month. Taken together with the access to online data obtained by the government announced in the Queen's Speech this, to me at least, is a very worrying trend.
  8. That's a very good point Rob. Though I don't buy 10k coins, I have bought several for £1-2k+, which means that when I spot an example on eBay that would perhaps be a nice upgrade for a relatively common coin worth only perhaps £100, I might nevertheless stick in a bid for £150 just to be sure of getting it. This doesn't mean the coin would generally be worth more than £100, just that there's a fool out there (me in this instance ) willing to pay over the odds to save the time and hassle of finding another such example. I did this very thing the other night, buying an UNC 82 grade CGS slabbed upgrade for over the odds. I can't be alone in ocassionally acting this way!
  9. I can make out the entire right hand upright of the H, and the top half of the left. (I zoomed my screen.) Likewise. I zoomed in on the iMac and can see this fairly clearly.
  10. Where's Joe Blogg's coins... the car is fuelled and I have 2k in my wallet!
  11. 6/7, having no idea that the land of the Somalian pirates still uses the shilling.
  12. Yep... worked for me. I was beginning to wonder what happened to my post until I noticed it had been moved. My fault, I should have posted in the right place originally!
  13. Is it just me, or is there a missing folder image against some of the sub-forums on the main forum listing? I've only noticed this over the last couple of days and it obviously depends whether there are unread threads in the particular sub-forum. My browser places a default question mark in place of the image.
  14. New age punk? We had the real thing in my school days. Most of their music was rubbish though!
  15. Received the email today to say the catalogue is on line. A few interesting items. Is that your 1893/2 Rob?
  16. I long ago came to the sad but inevitable conclusion that if you run a small business you are almost certainly breaking one law or another 24/7. There is absolutely no way that you can possible keep up with every law or regulation imposed on your business and still find time to do an hour's work a day.
  17. That's weird. I genuinely thought she was Jeremy Clarkson's daughter. Didn't she also try her hand as a pop singer??? What was her name again? If she were, that would be enough to put me off her immediately. I was sure I heard Clarkson's daughter had released a record! And each time I heard Kelly's name mentioned, that's who I thought they meant ! As I don't watch American Idol or any such show, and as TOTP is now deceased, I guess you could say I'm now an official dinosaur. Except not so much that I don't know that James Blunt is for grannies only, Dido is boring as hell, and I know from my own nightmares that Sealion Dion is someone to run shrieking from. I'd be equally rude about La Houston except she's no longer with us, poor shrieker. I don't like Green Day, I do like McFly, I think Keane and Coldplay and suchlike all sound the same... so I that's my street cred out the window. Except I also hate U2 so I just won it back again Quoting those names might have given you street cred about 5 years ago (according to my daughters)
  18. Proportionally? Some of the buggers pay less, full stop!! The system stinks. I was going to comment but thought better of it
  19. Debbie You are so welcome on this forum the BU penny boys need a bit of a slap.just keep posting At least we occupy higher ground than the BU farthing boys
  20. The Eddy pennies are all very difficult to find with good obverse details Strangely, the best pennies for detail are the 1902s - LT and normal - where you can get some really good hair definition. 1907 reverses are pretty notorious. Also, full lustre without spotting is tricky for the whole series apart from maybe 1902 normal. I agree. Several of mine are in the upgrade list even though most have full lustre. 1902s are best for some reason. My 1906 is plain awful!
  21. It's definitely a settings issue and not something you should have to live with. I presume it's currently configured for widescreen movies? You need to change the aspect ratio, rather than the resolution, though both are usually linked together. Is it Windows or Mac?
  22. Only the sale of gold coins is free from CGT. Don't tell em. It is easily done. Quite so. Who's going to declare the trickle sales of coins? As long as it's within the annual CGT allowance, nobody cares. Even then, the allowance usually applies to individual items or sets. So as long as each individual item sale is below £6k then several sales can be made per year. This is from the BBC website and talks about stamps, but could equally be about coins: Question: I am in my 60s now, and have been building my philatelic stamp collection for over 40 years. Whilst I have not kept records of my expenditure over the period, it has sometimes been substantial. I have now commenced selling my collection gradually on eBay and through some UK auction houses. The proceeds average about £1,500 a month, and could continue to do so for quite a number of years. How do I establish if I have any tax liability in this situation? At present I am also in full time employment and pay tax through the PAYE system. Do I have to report my stamp sales on my self-assessment returns? Answer: Stamps would normally count as assets for CGT purposes and so would be liable to tax on disposal. However, they would rank as "chattels" (tangible moveable property) and would be outside CGT if the proceeds do not exceed £6,000 per item. What "an item" is might be an issue: HMRC do have some anti-avoidance rules to stop someone breaking up a set and selling in stages to keep under that limit. They say that a collection of stamps is not normally regarded as a set even if all the stamps are from one country or are all about a particular theme such as birds. However, if it contains examples of all the values of a commemorative issue or a definitive issue of one country, these will, themselves, form a set. There may be a question of HMRC asking whether you are trading by disposing of your collection in stages. That would lead to income tax. You may be able to escape that by showing that it is the only practical way of disposing; that you did not aim to make a profit when you bought, just enjoyment. But the fact that you are selling over an extended period in regular amounts may cause some problems.
  23. Probably not worth insuring individually (it should be below the valuables limit on your house contents insurance - but check). Certainly worth keeping safe though. Value will depend on condition. You say 'mint' but without a photo it's impossible to verify. The value lies in the range £350 - £1k, with £1k for a perfect specimen.
  24. It's Mission Impossible. Define which coins there should be spaces for - every Peck, Freeman, Satin, and Gouby variety? All date spacings? Unbarred H's? Doubled letters in the legend? Missing serifs? Recut letters or numerals? 2's and 3's at varying angles? Every instance of ultra-rare die number even if you couldn't possibly get them? Define your own complete series, and put them in a blank album using Coindex flips where you can print or write the details on a slip of coloured card that slots into the upper flip. The only bespoke albums are - for example - the Whitman series, but they only contain the major varieties. Or I use Lighthouse trays and Qudrum capsules, but there are similar products from other manufacturers (see the shop on this website). The beauty of these systems is that you can move coins around to only create spaces that you actually hope to fill. Labelling of my coins is ongoing so not all in this photo have labels. My respect for you is growing. My daughters are learning all the time and have suggested online/offline storage. get them recorded so when you are dead and gone that rare variety doesn't get sold for peanuts. You're very kind. My daughters do occasionally view my penny website so know what I have locked away. I doubt I'll sell them in my lifetime. They can do what they like after that!
