  1. Yup i was thinking in the same ballpark Paul
  2. Still waiting on my grade, but its been attributed as the 1*+A
  3. It certainly can't be an easy task, but how would you sell a coin that was already overpriced as we've seen from the Slaney auction, i don't believe that everyone who has bought from that auction to be a collector, so will the name (provenance) sell it, but at what cost? I get the coin news every month and they have a "meet the dealer" section and a normal question is "Do you collect" and almost all have said no because they've used the collection to start up their business, you seem to be an exception to that rule Rob
  4. It makes you wonder how dealers survive then......
  5. Exactly what i mean, "who knows what the future holds". I remember maybe 3 years back when maundy sets started exploding into life and prices rocketed. My "investment" quote may be taken out of context, but each coin we buy is an Investment for your future or your Kids etc etc, i don't See why paying a little more now will hurt later if its a Long term thing. Granted i've not seen the H8 that Rob mentioned, but if he was willing to bid then it had to be none too shabby.
  6. I'm not a fan of this "it's too much" Somewhere along the line coin prices rise. I remember Rob you showed us a Cromwell Crown/halfcrown, can't remember what it was Off hand, but when you posted it you Said you paid over the odds for the coin, at the time i think you mentioned a figure of 2k which people Said was "over the odds" but now its not "over the odds" it's now valued at 2k more.Eventually, surely, if its a long term investment (as long as its not going "over the odds") a few £s more now will reap the benefits later. Uncommonly good hammered coins are worth pushing the boat out a Little more, thats only my opinion, but i remember the ebay fight WE had over an ER I threepence this year, was that over the odds?
  7. There's a UIN but its not searchable. It says attribution pending. Isthis because its a variwty? I've no idea
  8. Lol, i'm not gonna say much. How's your CGS coins coming along Paul? Mine was at finalising grade yesterday and now pending attribution today. No pictures of it on their website
  9. The man himself
  10. Nobody wants to pay over bullion on later Sovs
  11. Also on the up but for high grade, VF+
  12. "Might be guilty"? Mr P 9 times out of 10 generally is guilty of overgrading and a spot of cleaning. A lot of the silver looks lifeless due to dipping for far too long. You should go through this thread, you'll see his name mentioned quite a lot
  13. Lol, you obviously don't know Mr Platt
  14. Blind Pew (ter)
  15. That would be a tricky one because we all have different interests. I could probably give you a top 50/100 for 'affordable' sixpences. Then again, my definition of 'affordable' might be different to yours. £1000 is affordable
  16. An 1850 in EF or more would be a scary price, just checked Londons realised prices and a recent VG/FINE went for £1600. I'm surprised there is no 1854 or 63 Florins on the SG list yet a 1905 halfcrown is. It would also be interesting to make a FORUM 100/200 list for the more affordable coins for the normal collector
  17. I think its safe to say that Most of these coins are out of reach of the "normal" coin collector

  19. What i don't get is if these coins were already overpriced and as a few here have stated "of average quality" why were they bidding to excess, where do they believe any profit will come from and how long do they expect to hold onto these investment coins before a profit can be made. Once they've been split from the Slaney collection the provenance of the coin obviously still applies, but would they still be as "desirable" saying they've come from Merrill Lynch for example. I've seen coins at Londoncoins sell 4 years previously come back to be sold there again and have only achieved the same/similar price or less after a few years, surely this would suggest that a collector would'nt be fooled by a previously realised price. The only other thing i dislike is dealers selling "investment" coins, what if dealers get it wrong? I posted a short story of an Australian dealer selling an "investment" coin for several hundred thousand AU dollars, when the buyer came to cashing in his chips the coin was sold or valued at half of what he paid and successfully sued the dealer for his money back plus what they Said it would be worth, the dealer went bankrupt due to this. So where can this GB200-350 and 500 lists be found, i think it would make interesting reading
  20. Cheap coin with 90 mins to go. Being sold by Alan from MHCOINS. 27 watchers, so it may still rise 271862767305
  21. Maybe a few of us here should club together and do something similar?
  22. They'd run out of numbers, Dave! I think it would be interesting to see what the Liz groat would grade as if the above is an AU53. Looking through their website population report i can't find any hammered in there.
  23. I seriously need to send some of my hammered to NGC if thats the grades they're handing out
  24. As i normally don't Do slabs i can't answer that but someone on here once said they bought a coin at auction from Londoncoins at whatever grade they graded it at, sent it to CGS for slabbing and it came back lower than the auction grade
  25. Just goes to show that the collection name helped it along a smidge
