Azda, you are correct it is a partially block die, there are also examples of 1843 penny DFF, both described in Bramahs, on the better grade examples the lower part of the E is still traceable and repairs to the E are evident on the later dates. I've also dealt with Ian, we do email now and again, but not sure why these would be called DFF when you can clearly see the trace of the E, so obviously not an F. Its not ike the inverted A for V on the halfpennies where its obvious a letter has been replaced The same is also stated for 1875H farthings where the lower limb of the E is broken, they are also referred to as RFG type, just a simpler form of denoting the type, but you are correct, it is incorrect Lol, just to make things easier.........It sold for 73 quid anyhooo

Not a laugh really, more probably misrepresentation of the coin. I have seen 8 since the first was identified two years ago, recently two have sold on Ebay as V over A, the Australian Ebay one shown (£235) and one a couple of weeks previously (£105),they were both in similar condition to your own, both of the auction winners knew the variety, and are forum members, I was an underbidder on both! Peckris is right when he says the Copper series is littered with similar overstrikes, deliberate as with dates and repairs for longivity of the die, but errors in spelling and setting out of the legends are less common, usually it is the first/last letters of the text, as with V/A, the first of VICTORIA, and the last of GRATIA, but there are a couple where the letters are side by side in the legend and have inadvertently been swapped. Many cities in the UK during this period used their own coinage to trade with due to the shortage of coinage during the late 1700s early 1800s, this will be one of those. A reference book called Dalton and Harmer will point you to its value, check it out at your local library as its an expensive book to buy for just 1 coin

I would have thought that with PCGS and NGC moving into Europe that CGS would be less strict to attract more custom, not the other way round But that 1934 Wreath crown is definately not GF, seriously, i don't think i'd ever submit a coin to CGS if thats how harsh they are. This is certainly a VF, any fool can see that. .There is a certain long time dealer (near the front of coin news)who overgrades by at least 1 point.... Did'nt realise Martin Platt advertised in there He's now using his wifes ebay to sell his wares

Unfortunately Dave, they actually typed "Good Fine" and not GF or GVF, so perhaps this is actually their grade. Also if i was a Halfcrown man i'd be going for lot 1711, there's actually a few nice HCs in there

Christ, i think they're being a bit harsh on this one, lot 1539 1934 Crown described as GF, if thats a good fine then i'm seriously needing my eyes tested, i'd have put this in the VF/GVF category at least

A little to late in the year, although saying that, i have spotted my 2nd 1905 halfcrown in GVF this year, trouble is, should i or should i not :-/

Now this is a nice coin, but clearly the seller is ovehyping it to make more cash. And here is another that looks very similar: scratch on neck, scatch in front of top lip and even has the same obverse rim nick at around 7 o'clock. Baldwins, DNW, that's frightening.... We're not talking eBay here! Yes, but the Baldwins sale was also in Hong Kong, that says it all. It might be harder to spot an original these days than the fakes .

And all appear to have a scratch along the neck on the edge of the hair ... very suspicious. And worrying. And have now found my 3rd, a good weekends work, but very worrying 3 fakes have been seen in just 1 weekend

Needless to say peck it did sell for over 1k, but that was just pathetic from him. Obviously he was looking at making a 4 figure profit from me
