I think we should just go back to the Victorian shield reverse. Or something gothic. You know like a relief of the Houses of Parliament, plenty of spikes and gargoyles and other such niceties. Pity they don't build buildings like that any more, i also like the classical style architecture of the late 18th century with the columns and stuff...

I still advise to hold. The coin market is slowing down and the bottom will drop out of it shortly. If what i read on RCC is correct, gold is static, the paper assets are going down. (which makes it look like gold's going up...) Personally i hold onto the coins... for a while.

It's probably a good thing to do, if we ever go over to the euro any time soon for instance then that might alter things. Cos they might stop minting sovereigns. Nothing in the future is certain, the price may drop further, but it'll go up again eventually because that's what gold and silver do, rise, fall, rise, fall. A few months back gold had risen in price, it's falling now.

One good thing is they are in good condition, still in their cases, still have the certificate and everything. That's good.

Two reasons for a drop; Firstly did you buy them from the mint? If so then the mint charges prices that are higher than those of the secondary market. Although at the time the secondary market would have been closer to the mints price. Cos when sets are new they are all the rage, kinda like new cars. 15 years or so down the line how much would you pay for a 1988 car now? Second reason; the gold prices have dropped since the 1980s, the 1980s were a period when gold was a hot comodity, in the early 80s it was something like $800 per ounce, now it's more like $380 per ounce. Thus as the gold has dropped to a low the bullion value has dropped. It'll probably go up again sometime in the next ten years, but it'll come down again.

You know i'm sure it would have been easier to add up all the pennies before and after do the calculation like that and then redistribute it all back into £sd format. So £10/10/- = 360d £1/3/6, 1/4d = 240 + 36 + 6, 1/4d = 282,1/4d 360d-282, 1/4d = a hell of alot less (77, 3/4d) 77, 3/4d = 12X6=72 so 6/- 5 3/4 pence is left over. And thus 6s. 5, 3/4d

6s. 5 3/4d in largest denoms available. Now the 5/- did not really circulate so you could have got one of those but two halfcrowns are more likely; Thus; 2/6 x 2 1/- x 1 3d x 1 1d x 1 1/2d x 1 and a farthing.

Which would make 6/5, 3/4d change

I am dyslexic with numbers. We used to have questions like that at school, (not in pre-decimal currency) but stuff like how long it takes a man to go somewhere in a car with half a gallon of petrol at 6 mph, 7 miles, how many times he refils, plus how much change he got when buying it, and if he set off at 6.30 when did he arrive? Every time i saw a question like that i put a dash next to it and moved onto the next one. You totally lost me there mate, completely. I could figure out how much you spend and the change, but when it comes to getting cash in largest denom coins, i could never do anything like that, far too complex. But i can tell you how many atoms are in 1 mole of carbon should you wish.

Yep found it... i thought it was there. I had six, now down to two. It's very very rare occurence you'll get two in change at any one time. Although i've spent them two at a time. I wonder if the 2004 issue's going to be like this? A no show date...

You'll be waiting a fair while then... I'm still looking. I spent about 4 of them a few weeks ago because i had nothing else left to spend and i had to pay the train fare somehow. I think i've got 2 more lying around somewhere, i can only find one but i've got an idea where the other should be.

You answered you're own question. £5 coins are 'crown sized', but not technically crowns. The Mint calls them that, but the mint is wrong. They are £5 coins. Calling them crowns is contensious because it leads to confusion between the two very different denominations. The last Crown was minted in 1981.

I think you've either got a good fake or a mint set escapee. The latter is know but it hasn't happened to me yet! The 1988 £1 coins are the scarcest of them all, and they are the only ones with the single shield design. They're personally my fave, i try not to spend them if i can help it. Not that they're worth more than any of the others but i like them. I'd hang onto the fake then you can compare all future £1 coins to it.

Ah our beloved Sponk! What does it say on the edge of that £1 coin from 1997 by the way? DECUS ET TUTAMEN? As for the 1999 one that as far as i am aware should be the Scottish design. Edge inscription should be NEMO ME IMPUNE LA... I can never spell the last word, but it should be something like that and not; PLEIDOL WYF IM GWLAD, Or DECUS ET TUTAMEN. Forgive any of my spelling errors there. Have you found any 1988 £1 coins yet though?
