If they are 17 & 18 Century coins I would strongly advise you not to do anything rash. Identify them first....I'm sure this Forum can help.

Pre decimal currency....I can just remember it.....unfortunatley I didn't have a lot. Both my grandfathers collected key dates from change...I've got 42 1959 Scottish shillings GVF to Unc. I was bought the Check you change booklets. Green,blue and red which I've still got somewhere...I also had the yellow one (Pre Victorian) but I havent seen that for years. WH Smiths also used to sell foreign currency sets...people bought me these for birthdays etc....my favourite uncle was a baker (delivery man) and my bun head collection of coppers was boosted considerably. I never used to be given old silver?.... and a halfcrown was a prized treasure.

Chris "me old mucker"...I'm knocking these out for £4.99 plus £115 P&P Ebay...love it or hate it...you can be watching THAT BARGAIN....when silly money steps in. I've just bought a 1858 1/2d & a couple of farthings for £2+...didn't realise until too late that he didn't take Paypal. I have fun by just searching....I got a cracking local picture for 0.01p the other day....what made me laugh is the bloke tried to deliver it & the Missus sent him away.

Farthings are collected by the educated few....take a bow JMD.. .If you don't get farthings no worries...you just don't know what you are missing...and may it stay that way.

Blimey you,ve actually found it..the treasure is buried ahhhhhhhggggg. the smaller coin is most likely a halfpenny and the Roman chap is Georgeoceasurus 111....the 57 coin sounds more interesting though.

I forgot to mention that the "28mm Britannia's" you refer to are probably halfpennies (from the same period.) They all get bigger & smaller as you go backwards and forwards in years.....you're also entering a period where the majority of copper coins were forgeries/evasions..... however the public tended to accept these (as currency was in short supply).

It would seem from the dia of 23mm that you have a 1749 George 11 farthing. From your comment "been finding"I take it you are a detectorist!!!!! I will guess its made of copper and not very pretty....green tinge? Very few Copper coins found in the ground are collectable.... Hope this helps.

I take it you wanted to find out if the coins are going to make you rich!!!!! Sorry but........ Without scans impossible to be accurate....but from your decscriptions I reckon the following. 1) 1752 sounds like a 1/2d in roughly F condition...catalogues £12/£20...ebay £5 to £15...not really sought after unless in excellent condition. It also could well be a forgery (although collectable in their own right) 2) 1866 1/2d...sounds like a coin for the scrap tin (50P ?) 3)What you describe is a half crown..if fine £15 to £20 catalogue value...a rarer year...but not a sought after coin (unless approaching mint condition.) 4)1966 set.....very plentiful/common say £10 to buy.

Sorry to start the Chav thread. Examples..... Rooney and his girlfriend...(plenty of footballers) Michael Carroll (Blingboy & lottery winner),Argos jewellery fans,Burberry check/stone island soccer hooligans. The list goes on. Unfortunate side effects of the materialistic 21 Century where designer is more important than design. A Chav would just love a sovereign set with diamonds stuck onto his mobile phone. Just type Chav into google & read and weep.

Sorry Chris I wasn't logged in. I think we gave similar advice...... The amount of times non collecting colleagues and friends have produced "their old coins" and I've had to disappoint them. The last time was a scanned copy of a battered 1906 6d which was sized against a 20p. (guess which was worth the most...albeit close)

Chavtastic..and a disgrace

Coincrafts work came out in 1995 and then this was updated in 2000.....update every 5 years maybe? Its a good reference and especially useful with hammered penny's etc. The pricing in all the books is subjective....the prices are purely a guide and an educated guess. If I see a coin at a fair,on Ebay or on a dealers site I might glance at the guides but I will have a rough idea how much I'm willing to pay. Ebay seems to have opened up the market and interest in coins. There is absolute rubbish making good money,equally there are also bargains to be had. It also proves that some coins are a lot rarer or common than the various guide books indicate.

I'm sure a lot of people went about their day to day business without using coins. Relying on barter or payment in other terms. Coins until the 19 C were an intrinsic item....what a great wheeze when the government pursuaded people to accept coins at less than face value & eventually into accepting papermoney(promise to pay the bearer etc.) A fanscinating history I'm sure.

In 1973 my Dad bought his 1st ever Brand new car....a Hillman Avenger 1.5 super de lux (didn't even have carpets though....only the top of the range had that). It was £1075 !!!!! Today a similar car...maybe a focus?? is 12k ie approx 12x 1973 prices. I've also got some pricing books from the late 60's early 70's and coins comparitivly were not cheap. Especially 20 century "Key dates" the whole nation was "Checking their change" I think there are great bargains today.

Now....why am I thinking of a tasty bit of RUMP ???
