Unfortunatley coins which had a date but alas have lost them over the years are usually scrap. I've got a few seemingly nice Ch11 1/4d's with nice obverse but unreadable dates...might as well drill em and use as washers.

I wish this subject/format was given a wider coverage by the BBC. I know a lot of the BBC local stations get together and broadcast one programme during off peak times its a shame it isn't this one. Imagine if you could reach the massed retirement areas eg Clacton/Frinton....there must be stacks of interesting coins tucked away in lofts and the like. You are brave men putting yourselves up there to be shot at....I take it that it is live. I think it would be great TV (Sky?)to mix up a few of the popular collecting hobbies and produce a series. Just look what TV has done to Antiques in raising profiles.

Unless its "as struck" £20 or £30 ....then it won't be worth a lot. If you can clearly see Victorias hair detail,a sharp image of the Union Jack on Britannia's shield,there are no edge knocks,the date and lettering are all clear and it HASN'T BEEN CLEANED. It maybe worth £3 to £7. A worn coin but with date & lettering clear ....maybe £1. Still thats not a bad return (there were 480 to the £)

If it is average circulated condition...ie everything readable and Queen Victorias neckless quite defined its worth about £1/2....if it is brilliant uncirculated it may be worth £10/20.....either way its a piece of history...and 92.5% silver. You could always put it in this years Xmas Pud.

Such a coin is surely the "Holy Grail" for a 2/6 series collector. Won't it spoil his enjoyment of tracking it down...just to have you present it to him? A couple of coins I want will require detailed inspection and negotiations before I would accept.

Do you recommend Clive Dennetts shop ? The journey to Norwich is about an hour. I think the Castle would be a good visit for my girls....however I don't want to leave the Missus shopping for too long. Last time I went to Norwich was a coin fair 2 years ago....I spent over £400...and the Missus wasn't far behind. The difference being I've still got and like the stuff I bought !!!!! I think the singing in Norwich is limited to the cathedral.He he he ......I live in the Blue side of Anglia.

If its a 1/2d (rather than 1/2p).It was probably deliberate so it could be used in a board game called "Shove Ha'penny". I inherited a board from my grandfather together with about a dozen coins (polished flat reverse side). Amongst these Victorian buns,Edward V11 & George V. It's actually a good game.

Coins were being clipped...one way to counter this was to introduce a longcross on the reverse rather than the smaller central cross. This happened midway thru Henry 111's reign.(1247). The longcross gave a ready made template to cut a coin into halves or quarters. I've read somewhere it was common practice to put coins in a hessian bag and shake vigorously to extract small particles of silver.
