Scrap value of a 1d please
Zo Arms replied to copper123's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I have a huge suspended ceiling to replace over the weekend, so a van full of light iron to lose come Tuesday morning. Will be having a stern word with someone re the coin situation, whilst I'm there. Thanks for the tip on the ali. -

I know. I've weighed them in there for years. Heavy copper, the same as you. And they all know me. New ruling, so I'm told. Been in force for about 2 weeks now. Used one of the side street dealers for a £30 loss. Don't know why but they weren't as heavy on their scales. Strange. -

A quick heads up. Just been to EMR to weigh in 30kg bronze coin. Apparently they can no longer accept them. Confirmed with the management there. About to see if the back street boys will take them. -
Only a thought but could it not be a fault with the 8 punch and not an underlying digit at all. If all the old dies had been used up, to meet the unforeseen delay prior to change over to bronze, a hastily made or altered 8 punch could create the anomaly directly on to a new die? Just throwing it out there.

Pleasantly surprised by a weigh in, early part of this week. Heavy copper exactly £6 kilo. Brass exactly £4 kilo. A rise on the previous week by around 40p. EMR -
Halfpenny ID check

I knew what you meant. I put a lot of faith in the REG F D colons as it's usually all I have to work with. They are saying to me, obverse 6. Definitely not 7. And REG to far from circle to be a 4. Re the flaw above the R in reg. If I'm looking at yours correctly, it appears to be above the hollow of the R whereas on mine and Bernie's it's above the leg. For some reason the top leaves and the forehead are shouting 5 at me? I see no reason why there shouldn't be a 5 + F out there. I can fully understand the problems I present to these pages now. -

Thank you for your time on this Bernie. Conclusive proof. Is that your coin may I ask? So, at least 3 known. Anyone else have one to add? -

Must admit that I was more swung towards a 6 but I haven't the experienced eyes to be certain on a worn coin such as this. Any idea on the current population estimates? I'm sure it must have increased since Dracott's figure. -
Hlafpenny Flan?
Zo Arms replied to oldcopper's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Sorry. The coin in the link at the start of this thread. I was interested in the 1878 halfpenny, a few lots further on. The above lot was skipped over. But without audio, I never heard why. -

Watched the auction today on my phone. Muted by auctioneer. This lot didn't get an airing. Anyone in the room able to say what happened to it? -

Thanks Bernie. Could I ask why you say 4? Using London coins photos for Ob 4 / 6 and comparing with the legend on the RHS, I can make it either, depending on which photo I use. I trust your judgement implicitly. Just curious. -

I'd like a little help with this one please. I think I'm correct with reverse F but can't make my mind up on the obverse. Not much to go on I'm afraid. 4 or 6 ? -

Extremely informative thread Gary. Thanks for taking the time to find it. I would imagine that your wants list is minimal.🙂 -

Really useful identifiers. Thank you all. Here's a couple of maybe wishful thinking. 1862. B over R. And an 1860 HAIF. Rev B, but paired with a 4, not a 2. -

I'd class that as F style hair. It's thicker and extends down slightly further, to cover more of her bra strap.😀 And I do appreciate a legend pointing. On most of my coins there seems to be very little Britannia left. -

Thanks Martin. Very helpful photo of the sea crossing the circle. And an F style lighthouse too. Is the hair to shoulder detail the same as an F? I've just rechecked the London coins photos and all bar 1 appear to have a G style sea detail. To my eyes anyway. -

Evening All. I'm having trouble with this one. Can't make up my mind whether G or I. Dracott's N pointings aren't helping. Neither are London coins photos of 310, 311. If I had to commit, I'd say G. -
I quite enjoy reading old threads. Some reach a conclusion. Others descend into mayhem and occasionally, like this one, the story ends abruptly. Does anyone know the history of the coin since this thread ended? Just curious.

Machins Mills halfpenny ID.

Thanks for the Heritage info. I'd go along with your identification using the die break. Some excellent realised prices even on the lower grades like mine. I'm a stone's throw from Portsmouth and Southampton so it could possibly have entered the country through one of those docks. I'll post the others on this thread just in case there's anything else worthy of note. -
The Diary of Leonard Wyon
Zo Arms replied to Mr T's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Dr Larry referred to it a few times in his threads. Wyon had a furnace at home in his workshop to harden dies it seems. Does sound a fascinating read.
