Thank you Darth! See what you started! I think I'm going to have to buy some acetone and a few toothpicks too as there might be a spot or two of green. I never had this trouble with 17th century silver! Of course ... I never spent so little on 5 coins before either. Would have been 6 but somehow I missed out the modern 20c when I added them all to my basket!

Why? ...er ... I think I might have a thing for Marianne. Which is to say the embodiment of liberty symbolised by a woman wearing a bobble hat Phrygian cap. Though I believe that, strictly speaking, on the 2 and possibly 10 Francs she is 'The Republic' and on the Dos Centavos, Liberty, rather than Marianne. So shoot me. At least I'm not buying farthings.

Oh dear. I think I have gone mad. I believe I just bought these:

I have no reference material for such things Rob. But I posted it to Coin Community for you. I'll let you know what replies, if any, I get in due course.

Well I switched off the filters and took predecimal.com out of compatibility mode and ... I still can't see who likes what. I am just devastated. LOL But on the 'good' side, now I'm not seeing it in compatibility mode, when I click 'Quote' it does now pick up the text I want to quote as it should. In case that helps anyone else. -
I'm pretty sure I have one of those PL crowns that Dad picked up during the Festival. And I have to say that despite normally being a ethical sort of chap, if someone really wanted to pay me silly money for it, I doubt I'd complain! eBay is just ... well, it's a world of its own really, isn't it? Perhaps we shouldn't be surprised at the occasional craziness.

Ah, yes. I'm using IE11. Maybe it's a browser quirk ... I suppose it must be difficult to write software that works the same for every OS/Browser combination. -

Not on mine, no. All I can see is that I can 'un'like Rob's post that I liked earlier. But then I've been having problems with the new forum. If I click 'quote' it just gives me an empty reply box. To actually quote I have to open 'quote' in a new tab. The URL linking doesn't work for me, instead I get this: and everything locks up. I meant to mention it to Chris earlier but never got round to it! I wondered whether it's because I have Flash and Active X disabled (I'm using IE7). And it won't let me add an image into a post unless I go to edit mode (the little switch above the B[old] at the top of the reply box) Anyone else?? -
PL 66? Is this a new grade? Lemme guess ... Proof Like? And if so .. what does that mean, exactly ... All I will say is that I don't think it would have made that on ebay.co.uk Edit. I'm tempted to follow suit. I shall start my own grading. Every coin will be placed in a plastic 2"x2" flip and I shall personally write the grade in Sharpie in the outside.. grades will range from WL10 (Washer Like) to CL42 (because it's a Coin, like ..) Particularly nice ones will have a chocolate coffee bean sellotaped to them. And the really dire ones will be attached to a Wings CD using superglue. Charges will be reasonable.

				Spink Auction 207
TomGoodheart replied to azda's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
https://www.spink.com/auction.aspx?id=11008 23 March 2011 but Spink lists it as auction 11008 for some reason. If that's it? Any particular lot? -
Apparently she was trying to beat the end of month deadline on ebay and hadn't got the photos ready so will put the correct images in tomorrow. And there was I thinking a poor confused widow left with a handful of coins and some random descriptions!
 -
The seller did mention "my late dennis" so it's possible it was inherited and all the coins have become separated from their descriptions. Maybe ...
 -
Oops. All of these seller's coins look acceptable enough. However most bear absolutely to relation to the description! I did email and ask if maybe the information for each coin had maybe gotten mixed up. And what this "1560 Tudor sixpence" has to do with gentleman's bracelets (which is where it's listed!) I have no idea! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/coin-British-early-tudor-6-pence-1560-in-very-high-grade-/251439436124?pt=UK_Jewellery_MensJewellery_MensBracelets_GL&hash=item3a8af5515c In fact I did suggest that if they were unsure they should visit here and we'd ID their coins for them!

I'm especially taken by the recent replicas and electroplates. I shall have to look out for similar next time I'm visiting a stately home or museum. As you say, genuine Victorian (and Elizabethan of course) pennies exist by the skipload. Curious to go to the effort of making the things!
 -
	Those are kinda cool!
 -
It certainly is a puzzle! Really my only contribution would be elimination. What I can't see is a cross patonce or a 'T' I agree there does seem to be a pomegranate to the obv. And really what to me looks a bit like the edge of a cross pattée. All overlaid with a number 1. There. No help at all to you!

Always Buy The Highest Graded Coin That You Can Afford
TomGoodheart replied to damian1986's topic in Beginners area
As with everyone else, I agree balance is the thing. There are coins of the sort I collect that are much nicer than the ones I have. Can I afford them? Well, setting aside they are in someone else's collection so not available at present ... probably. At least if I sold my other coins I could probably afford two or three. But then if I sold the investments I've put aside for my retirement I could possibly afford a Ferrari! And that's the thing. I have a budget. I (more or less) have a maximum I want to spend on a single coin, though in practice most cost me quite a bit less. But I set standards in 'eye appeal', balanced with rarity/availability and decide based on those whether I want a coin at a particular price or not. But those aren't fixed in stone. I have a coin with an unusual mint mark which is recognisable but pretty naff. But at £18 including postage I thought it was an acceptable purchase. having said all that, I have come to realise that the coins I like for longest and least regret buying are generally the better examples. I ignore far more coins than I buy for this reason. Yes, in the early days I was keen to fill all the gaps. But like the market, I have stated to shift from obtaining all the varieties, in whatever condition, to more commonly found coins in uncommonly good condition where possible. One of the advantages of doing this is that if you want to upgrade, if your current coin is pleasing you are more likely to get a reasonable return on it, helping to fund the gradual improvement of the overall collection. Very few people nowadays seem to want scruffy coins, even rare ones any more. But in the end, it's what gives you pleasure. It's your collection and you'll be the one admiring it! Oh, and welcome! -
That's rather what I thought Rob, so it's helpful to get confirmation. As to binding, there are two volumes. Logic suggests that the 4 medal cats are bound as one and the 2 coin ones the other. Although the dealer seems reluctant to sell as I just got a slightly terse reply to my enquiry and none of the additional details requested... Were the price right I'd go for it and either live with a mixed volume or have it re-bound, if that were feasible. LOL Are you offering Peter? It's OK, there is another item I'm thinking of going for, so I think I shall leave this one for now. Douglas Saville said he'd look out for the catalogue I want, so I'll see how he gets on. Who was it that got me into this blooming numismatic literature lark? Oh, yes ...
 -
OK, so there's an auction catalogue I'm interested in. But it is being sold together with some early medal sales, for which I have no use. I wondered if anyone might be interested in the medal catalogues to offset the overall cost? The info I have so far is that they include the Tombs, Payne, Irwin, and Gray sales of war medals. Sold through Glendining & Co., between 1918-1920 and in very good condition. Bound, though I'd need to ask for more details. I know nothing about medals, so have no easy way to assess how much they are worth. But I'd be looking for £100+ if I got them. If anyone might be seriously interested I would be happy to ask for further details, but the seller hasn't been particularly forthcoming so far so I didn't feel like pestering further unless there's a chance I might buy the things. Anyone?
