An interesting question to ask is why did the penny sell for less than half what It would go for at auction? What forces are at work that makes the Ebay coin seem less worthy? Is this true of all coins on Ebay compared to say, LCA?

I knew from his other listings that he wasn't selling stuff he thought to be amazing, and would be stunned by how this one lot went. I've been there- I had a whole pile of old audio gear on Ebay a few years ago, and one valve amp went mad-it was, unknown to me slightly different to the common ones. I had one guy contact me and advise me what was happening, and his advice was so useful- I had so many comedy offers to Buy It Now ( just like the penny seller had! ) and I was advised to let it run, and an amp that i thought would be £150 went for over a grand, thanks to him....

is it just me, but is the date of the 1877 close date penny ( Lot 2422 ) a bit strange? The first 7 rather stands out...

I narrowly missed out- I spat my coffee out when I first saw it. When it was up over £100 within a day I contacted the seller and advised him to remain calm- we had a good chat over the next few days and he said he was hoping for £5-6, and was quite stunned. I expected it to do over £1000- who knows what the winning bidder had as their maximum....

Just spotted this post. You know, I'm sure that it was a 1912H that Tony Crocker put on Ebay years ago that I was watching, and it went for a ridiculous amount. I was chatting with him on the phone, and asked him why it went for such an amount, and he said that the buyer said the nose was "different"....we both couldn't see it.....

2 over 1? What book is this listed in? My 20th century lists need updating!

I just thought that the esteemed members of this community might be interested to know that a 'milliHelen' is the amount of beauty required to launch one ship.

Yep, lighting angle different, but some matching scratches. Same coin. Scratches can be surprisingly 2D sometimes, and changing the light angle can make them vanish.....

Surely an "Official" complaint to Ebay from some numismatic body or other would force them to address this problem? The threat of bad publicity might have an effect......

Greetings...I'm on a MacBookAir, and want to add a link in the text to a page on ebay, so you can click on it and bingo. How do I do that? I've tried everything, but I'm not a computer guy so a reply saying that I should 'format' it, or some such, means nothing to me....I'm used to just dragging and dropping, and that's that. I got round the .49Mb picture limit by always emailing the pictures to myself, with the file size on medium..... regards Blake

I've been wondering about this one.... It was the second finest in the CGS Population Report, and it was noted that no examples were in the Alderley or Norweb collections. I think it's a Type 5, but I'm not sure..... It was tricky to get the pictures in focus enough to see the finer detail. Will the edge knocks detract from its value? I don't know any more than that- I'm not expecting The Spanish Inquisition....

Ha! Is a saw a very thin file? Where does one stop and the other start? Is one car 'traffic'? Tracy Tools used to do hilarious charts with different bolt types on etc.. All made up and hilarious...perfect for the workshop wall. I've just emailed them to see if they still do 'em....

Best get her a job with a grading company then!!!!!
