Talking about 1807 pennies, I've just managed to obtain this 1807 restrike proof, P1354, R98. Plain edge and has the characteristic rust spots heavily concentrated on the King's face and neck. Of course the rust is largely due to the dies being out of use for many years, decades in fact, when Taylor bought them in 1848, possibly by default with some scrap metal, and started producing various "proofs" from legitimate, genuine dies, albeit somewhat aged, from his workshop in Red Lion Street, London. All really interesting stuff.

The wife and I had this discussion a couple of years ago when China started playing hardball in Hong Kong and decided if there was a forced mass exodus we would put someone up. The same would apply today, but currently have a problem in that 2 offspring are temporarily living here, so no free room at present. Personal privacy doesn't really come into it. They would want to move to a more stable environment asap where there was room to swing a cat in any case, so it wouldn't likely last more than a few months. When the shit really hits the fan, there's a moral obligation to do whatever you can to help.

Crufts is back on TV again, and I never watched it before because of the antics of some of the awful dog breeders, and I won't watch it this time. I might wait a couple of weeks and watch Paracrufts......

Not watching it? Barking mad, surely I love Crufts, it's the dog's bollocks. Mind, given the noise some of the dogs make, I only need a sub woofer loudspeaker to listen. Settle down with a nice cup of tea and a hot dog to watch it. (sorry, sorry)

I guess with a Victorian penny being worth around 50p today, it would make it worthwhile! I guess the better forgers would be concentrating on the silver or gold, leaving the lowly coppers to those whose life was transformed simply by their affording to buy bread? I don’t buy the mangled ‘genuine’ penny theory. I’m inclined to think that someone made up some cast dies and had a play. Just out of interest, and I couldn’t find any when searching the images, does that misaligned ‘I’ in Victoria exist as a variety?
