I think it may well be because 1911 fell between the death of the crown as currency (either 1901 or 1902) and its rebirth purely as a commemorative (1927 and after).1 point

I hadn't seen your picture (I often reply to a topic without noticing there are more pages, unread). That dot is somewhat elliptical though not the apostrophe it clearly is on other examples. Two hypotheses: 1. It started as an ellipse which 'grew' a tail due to deformation. 2. It started as an 'apostrophe' but the tail - being rather thin and fine - got filled in.1 point
