  2. I'm trying to track down reports for the late 70's thru to the 90's. The reports were published by HM Stationary Office until 1977 (report 107), since then, they seem to have been hidden until the early noughties when they started appearing on the lamentable Royal Mint web site. I'm looking for actual production figures of Proof and Mint sets and not the maximum allowable figures. I am not hopeful that the reports will actually help as the post 2000 reports are a complete load of tripe. They hardly mention coin production, mainly concentrating on employee diversity targets and other such carp. Anyone got any ideas or figures (including the source).

  3. I think they changed them if something from a recent sale they had imaged was a significant improvement on the existing picture. They also used personal collections on occasion, as these frequently contain better coins than what passes through the saleroom. The best known of anything tends not to do the rounds.

  4. Do let us know; I have a dabbling interest in some of the coins and sets struck for foreign governments and was not able to get satisfactory information from the RM. And there is first the number authorised, then the number struck and then the net number released (because of returns, etc.). Even the net number released does not guarantee that the mint does not have some (or a lot) stashed in a warehouse somewhere.

  5. Three taciturn guys in a pub somewhere in deepest rural England. All sitting there supping their pints. One of them says, "nice warm day today". Half an hour later another one says "well I thought it were a bit cool". Another half an hour passes, and the third fella gets up and says "Anyway, I'm going home, too much bloody arguing round here".

  6. This is the coin that @Paddy drew our attention to a week or two back. He was selling it on e bay, and I was the only bidder. Just received today. It may be a common date, but this is no common representation of it. UNC, a truly superb strike, great hair detail, totally flawless and with immaculate toning. I initially though that the obverse was EF, but in hand, I'm half inclined to think that what appears at first glance to be wear at the highest points is in fact residual lustre. But either way, it's still a truly outstanding specimen, and amazing value at only £19.95. Thanks Paddy from a very satisfied customer (apologies, again, I've got that colour variation)

  7. Stuff to make you laugh? Watching Pointless whilst eating tea this evening, one of the questions was anagrams of TV shows. Only 90 people out of 100 were able to identify QI as one of the answers.....
