Looking at the comparative pictures above, most of the differences (apart from the colours!) seem to come from the angle of the final 1 rather that its horizontal position. Completely different to what we see with 1896 pennies, for example.

Actually, Rob, it's a bit seasonal. Just before Christmas last year I did a bottle count in the house and it was 208. My record. I make up beer boxes for friends and clients, each tailored to thier tastes. Some Belgian, Orval etc, or Matilda from Goose Island, the only two beers that use that type of brettanomyces yeast as far as I know, Matilda being licensed from Orval, and a ton from Bewdley Brewery, Gower Gold, and a big pile from Orkney. I've never had a failure with Orkney's "Northern Light", it's universally liked, particularly in the summer, and I adore Puffin with cheese, Dark Island with powerful cheese, and I like to share a bottle of Dark Island Reserve which is Dark Island left in a whisky barrel for a year. 10%. Amazing amazing flavour. If you like good beer, you must order one. Very easy to get a delivery straight from the brewery. Also used for jump starting trucks.

No they are the one not in Gouby he left out as similar to Ab. The one NOT in Gouby is the third one down on Terrys picture.

I'm confused with mine now . I had this down as an Ab , but it has a gap to the teeth .Is it a straightforward Ab ?

Hi Mike To answer your question I personally have only seen four of the Aa type . Below is a picture of the four types I have come across . Top is Ac with the 1 directly over the tooth [ I have seen about six of this type]. Next down is the normal common type Ab with the 1 slightly to the left of the tooth but the 1 its self is almost touching the tooth . Third down is very similar to Ab but the 1 is more to the left of tooth and importantly has a gap between it and the tooth { not listed by Gouby as its to similar to the common Ab type} bottom is Aa with the 1 directly over the gap between the teeth , all three of the rare types have that space between the 1 and the row of outer teeth, as Pete has already said

I think its the common one and yes they do look similar and why they are often confused. That i do know as bought a few that have gone straight in the bin.

It does look similar hard to say, I dont have the coin to hand. It cost me £1 so worth a punt.

Does look like one, to be sure would be better without the lines, although you have it in hand and should be easy to tell. A good indicator indicator is a gap between the last 1 and the tooth below. Also your own seems to hang over the right of the tooth rather than above it. These are only tiny differences and why its often confused with the common one. I am more drawn to being the common one Serifs and gap dont look right although would be much better without the last line which is a distraction.

Not the best picture so its difficult to really see. The central line of the last one appears to fall in the gap.

Easier just to share a clear picture of the date of the one you have.

Since you mention there is another not listed in Gouby possibly its not BP1901Aa the one I have.

I did read it yes. I found what I think is a BP1901Aa and was simply wondering how rare they are.

Correct although in High grade i have only seen Terrys. Looking at your picture and reading your comments, maybe you have just read my post from the one i sold a couple of weeks ago ?

I was under the impression they are rare in any grade with only a handful known?

Rare in High grade although often confused with BP1901Ab which is the normal one, there is also one not in Gouby as very similar to Ab. Terry is probably the best person to ask as the coin pictured in the book is his.

In your collection do you have a 1901 Penny, NARROW Date, BP1901Aa? How rare are these? I remember reading somewhere they are few and far between. Thanks,
