dvw1974 Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 Hi all,New to this, so please tell me if I am in the right group or notI found this coin in a coin lot I purchased recently - It is the size of a penny coin and as I know there was no pennies struck in that year for George III, I had difficulty identifying it.The coin measures 32mm across and weighs 11.9g (my scale might be slightly off).I have uploaded pics of the coinThanks Quote
Rob Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 A contemporary forgery of a G3 halfcrown. Originally the copper core would have been covered with a silver wash to pass it off as the real thing. Quote
TomGoodheart Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 Hi dvw. Welcome .... and just to let you know, I've deleted your duplicate thread for neatness! Quote
copper123 Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 There are literally millions of forgeries issued into circulation in George the thirds reign , it was considered a very serious offense to pass them on in this reign that saw off napoleon and the french revolution .If they had taken over from the circulating coin it would have had a very serious effect on the economy Quote
VickySilver Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Too slow, Rob beat me to the punch. I concur... Quote
