mitchellman Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 HelloI found this coins in the woods and really need help working out what it is, unfortunately it doesn't have many details, just the E and upside down R with a dot in between. On the other side is a cris-crossed pattern.Any ideas would be much appreciated, thank you. Quote
HistoricCoinage Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 Not a hammered coin but likely a medieval/post-medieval token: http://finds.org.uk/database/images/index/q/lead+token Quote
Coinery Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 I think it's a homemade casting, looking at the ER?Someone has created a mold, forgetting to mirror the letters, I reckon? Is it an ingot perhaps? Is it heavy? What's it made of? Quote
Coinery Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 looks like lead to meI'll bet it's a home-made coin weight? That would be plausible if it's made of lead? Does it weigh perhaps a Sov or Half Sov in weight? Quote
mitchellman Posted December 31, 2014 Author Posted December 31, 2014 Well it seems to weigh the same as a pound coin + 50p pence together. Found it 5" buried. You guys know more than me about these things, it does bend ever so slightly so I guess it is lead. Just wish I knew what the E and R could have meant back then, assuming it is old. Quote
HistoricCoinage Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 I'll bet it's a home-made coin weight? That would be plausible if it's made of lead? Does it weigh perhaps a Sov or Half Sov in weight?Looks very crude from the blurry photos above. Intrigued to find out more. Quote
Garrett Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 Could ER stand for Elizabeth Regina ?i.e. Queen Elizabeth (1st). Quote
Colin G. Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 Definitely a lead token, get plenty of these sort of things detecting. I understand they were used by farm hands as payment from the employer to use for buying farm produce Quote
mitchellman Posted January 1, 2015 Author Posted January 1, 2015 Thanks for your thoughts on this. Shame it isn't worth anything but it's only my 8th time out detecting so I guess that's being hopeful that I find something valuable just yet haha. Quote
Coinery Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 Keep posting up your finds, it's great for everyone to have a dip at. Happy New Year! Quote
Peter Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 Of course we all want to find treasure but equally I love finding history. When we go to North Norfolk I try and find fossils and amber on the beach. Quote
Colin G. Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 Don't get disheartened, I think these sorts of personal items are very fascinating, I really enjoy finding lead tokens and bag/cloth seals. Much more interesting than all those four hole buttons and shotgun caps! Quote
mitchellman Posted January 1, 2015 Author Posted January 1, 2015 Haha so true!I agree that with every find, it always makes me think of it's history and the people that would have held it, otherwise I would have given up metal detecting by now. I'm glad to be a part of this supportive forum and will share any more interesting finds with you all. I have many modern coins but I wouldn't want to clog the forums with those as they are mostly pre decimal common finds.Colin, yes shotgun caps are my biggest nuisance ( Quote
