I was watching Pirates of the Caribbean again with a few friends today and I was wondering what coin the Pieces of 8 actually are?
Ray Ives a treasure hunter in Plymouth called them coins from the association, not really sure what that is still

I believe they were 8 Reales from Spain and Spanish owned South American countries, as used for emergency coinage for George III and over-stamped with our king's head. Equivalent to roughly 5 shillings or a crown, but varied slightly with the value of silver.

Like this one:

That's quite cool! would anyone know where to find any more information about them?
more importantly I wouldn't mind getting my hands on one!

As Paul says. Pieces of 8 are/were Spanish 8 Reales, i like those, especially the Pillar ones (the Design of 2 Pillars) which ended about 1765-69 ish. Look them up, a nice coin to own but beware of forgeries

Yeh I have just googled 8 Reales and the first hit was a warning about fakes, may have to be a bit cautious and do a bit of research first

Yeah, a 'piece of 8' is basically an 8 real coin. They were produced throughout the Spanish world (so that's Mexico, Peru as well as Spain itself). Early ones were 'cobs' - essentially lumps of silver cut to the correct weight and stamped with the Spanish crest, moneyer's initial, mint and value.

Later they made proper coins, like the one Paul posted above.

I have to say its all rather interesting
Does anyone know of anywhere which would sell them, somewhere I wouldn't be stuck with a fake.
Otherwise I may have to start taking a metal detector down with me when I go diving and risk life and limb to find one :P

You're maybe better waiting on a reputable coin auction and try getting one from there, there are a lot of fakes of these as they are a popular coin or from a Dealer on the forum or from the owner of the Site and forum. Edited by azda

I was thinking that, Looking through some of the info and shops, I'm not one to rush into a purchase, especially one that looks to be quite costly.

There is coin auctions all the time, take your time, have a browse. In the meantime if one Pops up in auction or online somewhere i'll certainly give you a heads up

For a decent one with a Common mintmark, maybe £50-£100 depending on grade/age/region of South,America, rarer types will obviously cost more

Just to add...most the Association coins were W3 though, weren't they?

Agreed re the piece of 8 coins, very attractive!

Were they your own coins P & TG? Very nice if they were! :)

Realey? (see what I did there!) - I would have thought more like £250 in a strong Fine (if you're lucky) and up and up from there! (for a George 3 emergency issue I mean!)

Not mine sadly Stuart, haven't quite decided to do about all those G3 emergency issue and B of E coins yet!

Whats the W3?

Sometimes lazy and abbreviate, sorry Asumel (is that your real name? (lol).

W3 = William III

G3 = George III

Coinery = Stuart

Azda = Dave

There was a famous shipwreck (The Association) which had a huge quantity of coins on board when it sank, including much Charles II (of England) and pieces of 8

Ah I see, threw me a second then, seems simple now you mention it :P

Asumel is an anagram - easy to use for forum stuff ect, Samuel/Sam is my real name

I didn't realise it was a ship he was referring to, I thought it was, as the name suggests an Association.
