The last digit was entered manually on the die and so can vary considerably in position. For a similar thing on an 1862 halfpenny, post #18 refers. Here Quote

The rare version of this coin has the the whole 1862 date formed using noticeably smaller numerals, usually described as being from the 1/2d.Here is a coin with similar spacing to the one you have, for comparison: Quote

Like most engineering jobs the simplest task is always given to the dumbest operative hence the number of bizarre varieties! Quote
