pies Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 Just bought this of the bay. Its a 1883 shilling it looks like an inverted V but maybe just a blocked die what do you think Just need to know how to record it,oh and im grading it as fine although im out of my comfort zone in vicky stuff,I can just about manage to get an eddie7 close cheers Quote
argentumandcoins Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 Yes it is a bit of die fill. You are a wee bit harsh on the grade though. It looks to be VF give or take half a grade. Quote

If you look at the general profile of the A's on your coin, you will notice they are all leaning forward, including the 'inverted V,' whereas the V of Victoria, if turned to view it as a potential A, actually leans slightly backward! pies Posted July 23, 2012 Author Posted July 23, 2012 Im fairly sure i know what you mean but ill have a closer look when i get the coin in hand. Still a good buy imho cost £11.40 :-) Quote
pies Posted July 29, 2012 Author Posted July 29, 2012 How many :D :D  IS it worthh giving it an acetone bath Quote
Rob Posted July 29, 2012 Posted July 29, 2012 (edited) Common date and it has been scrubbed, so probably about fair value. £15 max. An acetone bath won't get rid of the scratches which is the main detracting feature and there is no underlying lustre to bring out because the surfaces have already been compromised. It doesn't have eye appeal IMO as the washed out appearance suggests it has also been dipped. Edited July 29, 2012 by Rob Quote
pies Posted July 29, 2012 Author Posted July 29, 2012 Looks like a good candidate to practice on then Quote
