Descartes Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 Hi forum,I was wondering if I could have an opinion on this sixpence please? I enjoy collecting Viccy sixpences with die numbers and have seen one i like on good old ebay, but for some reason I think the '7' looks a bit odd on this one. Would appreciate another person's view. Thanks,Darren Quote
Gary Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 Hi Darren, looks fine to me. I have had a look at other 1877 6D on the internet and can see nothing odd with the date on the one you have posted.Have a look at Johns site, http://www.argentumandcoins.co.uk/ (hope Chris does not mind the link!), he has two 1877's on offer and the date looks exactly the same. I was just a bit concerned that the 7 on the die number looked like it was plonked on top of the wreath rather than being part of the actul strike. Thanks for the link and examples though. Feel a bit more confident about the coin now.Darren Quote
Gary Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 Ah, sorry Darren I thought you were on about the actual date. I see what you mean now. Although by no means an expert I still do not see a problem. There is not much room to get two digits in there between the date and the wreath and unless the die number is extremely rare why forge it? Quote

Being a newbie I thought I'd better check with people Quote
Peckris Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 (edited) Um, surely I can't be the only one who sees that the first 7 in the die number is inverted??(Thank you Nick - now I see the title of the thread! That'll learn me to read it fust..) Edited June 7, 2012 by Peckris Quote
Nick Posted June 7, 2012 Posted June 7, 2012 (edited) Um, surely I can't be the only one who sees that the first 7 in the die number is inverted??Although it does look like an inverted 7, it's a 2. The die numbers for 1877 sixpences only go as high as 35. Edited June 7, 2012 by Nick Quote
