I picked up my first hammered coin for a few pounds, Its seen better days, but I thought it would be fun practice for me to try and identify it.

I may be completely wrong already, but would like to know if anyone knows exactly what it is.

So far I have made it an Edward I long cross penny, 1272-1307, spink 1408? This is where I am stuck, there are 3 types listed I believe, and all the detail terms are confusing me!

Sorry the pics are not the best, I only have my phone camera at the mo.

I forgot about this post!

Was I correct in my identification of this coin? :)

It is London mint.I haven't got my reference books handy.

I think it's 9a (but no star on breast) Chris. Though I'm happy to be corrected when Peter has a chance to check. :)

I am in the process of making a record of all my coins. This question is probably a long shot... but is there any way to narrow down a date for hammered coins like the one I posted in this thread? or would it just be 1279-1307?

Thanks :)

There are no dates on coins until Tudor times, but it's often possible to narrow down the date range from the Spink type. I'm no expert on hammered types, so someone else will have to identify yours more closely.

Thanks for the quick reply Peck. 1279-1307 is fine for my spreadsheet, I just wanted to be sure there was no definitive list somewhere, of exact dates.

Not a problem at the mo... as I only have the one hammered coin! :)

Class 9s are typically understood to have been minted between 1299 and 1301. :)

I will take a wild stab at 1300 :)

That's pretty risky, Peter!

It is the April/May strike. B)

What date, time, Peter? :P

Do you want that in the Julian or Gregorian calendar ? :P
