Chris Perkins Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 I have a spare copy of Peck's 'English Copper, Tin and Bronze Coins in the British Museum 1558 - 1958'. It's the 1970 reprint (the most recent 2nd edition and the newest one available). Most of you will already know that Peck's work is still the most up-to-date reference for varieties of base metal coins pre 1860. Copies of the book are sometimes hard to find. Condition is very good, dust jacket missing - £150 plus postage at cost. PM me or white something here.Thanks. Quote

Generic Lad Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 So, why are the Peck books selling for quite a bit of money? Who owns the copyright to it? Surely they'd want to re-release it, after all, if someone is willing to spend ~$200 for a 40 year old book they'd be willing to spend $75 on a brand new reprinting of it! Quote
just.me Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 There is a 1964 2nd edition of Peck on Ebay just now if your interested Item number 220936506502 Quote

Chris Perkins Posted February 7, 2012 Author Posted February 7, 2012 The British Museum own the copyright. They will grant permission to re-print, but not cheaply. That combined with the printing costs of such a large book put me off in the end, although it's still something I may do one day. Quote

I'm not sure there have been that many updates identified as necessary (I'm not counting the micro-varieties of over stamping on Vicky copper - they are too minor and too numerous to be worth a major study). You could also argue that bronze pennies are more than well dealt with by Freeman, Gouby, Satin, et al. Bronze halfpennies and farthings could use an update perhaps? It would be useful to have all bronze denominations in a new version of Peck, though I feel he would still be the natural "go to" for copper and tin. Plus the Soho Mint output and Taylor restrikes, patterns, proofs, etc. Quote
Peter Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 I think Peck needs an update to bring everything together. The donkey work has been done.Varieties on farthings need to be listed.Even reading a Cooke farthing catalogue there are a lot of additions.Spink don't even list the 2 types of 1842 which are clear as a bell. PunkReaper Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 Since Peck is quite hard to get hold of and quite expensive do you feel that Gouby ( I have a copy of Freeman ) are good enough together or should I still look out for a copy of Peck? Quote
Rob Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 Since Peck is quite hard to get hold of and quite expensive do you feel that Gouby ( I have a copy of Freeman ) are good enough together or should I still look out for a copy of Peck?Depends on what you collect. If you collect copper as well as bronze, there isn't an alternative. Quote
Peter Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 Before I bought most books I used the local library.I would advise this as I must have bought 30 books and rarely use them all....However I love a book and they look good on my coffee table. Quote
Peter Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 Peck died in the 60's.How I would have welcomed him around for dinner. The same with John Minishall and the late great Colin Cooke.I spoke to Colin several times and he didn't suffer fools. While I'm at it there is space for Sir Issac and all the Crokers. Chris Perkins Posted February 7, 2012 Author Posted February 7, 2012 And the Wyon family? That's another factor that turned me off getting involved in a Peck reprint (apart from the cost). Lots of it needs updating (the bronze) or at least could be updated, but what a huge amount of work that would be - just deciding what goes in and what to leave out!I do actually have a full print ready PDF version of the 1970 Peck! (authorised by the BM, but I cannot use it/sell it) Quote
PunkReaper Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 That would be great to view on my I-pad Quote
PunkReaper Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 Great idea about the library, both Peck and Gouby ordered so I can have a look before deciding. Thanks Quote
Peter Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 It is shame Chris but a task like that....I shudder. The Wyons are already around here peeling the spuds.Ahhh Dr Johnson and Montague have just arrived. Quote

ThanksI dont have Gouby but I'm really not a 1d man.I do have Freeman. We all pay for the library and why not use it?Peck is always a reference I use again and again. Quote

Ditto. I emailed him several times and spoke to him on the phone at least twice, at length. You're right, he could get irritable! I also returned a few coins to him over the years, but to his great credit he was always prepared to replace or refund. Quote
Debbie Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 I'm sorry if this is a little off topic, but has anyone had any experience with these DVDs that are on EBAY at the moment? Here's an example that looks interesting. I have no idea whether any of the books listed are any good and the thought that there are 175 is a little mind boggling. Mind you it is from the Philippines......? Quote
