Englishpicker Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 I'm just wondering if this might be a 1944 overdate D over S mint mark error coin. It looks like the ones in the cherry pickers guide but I'm not sure? Quote
Rob Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 I'm just wondering if this might be a 1944 overdate D over S mint mark error coin. It looks like the ones in the cherry pickers guide but I'm not sure?Probably is if the discolouration on the D at the top is relevant. The lighter areas are where the top loop of the S would be. RLC35 Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 Englishpicker,Clean off the date (lightly handwash with soap & water), then look at the mintmark with a 20x or 30x loupe (a 60x scope would even be better), you will then be able to quickly determine if it is a D over S variety. It appears to be the real thing, at first glance. Nice find! Quote
Generic Lad Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 It looks a bit like it to me, but like others have said, it needs to be under higher magnification to be 100% sure. Quote
Englishpicker Posted December 29, 2011 Author Posted December 29, 2011 Thanks everyone for your advice. I've cleaned it very carfully using soap and water and a cotton bud and it looks to be that it is. My loop is a 25x but I'm going to have to get a greater one if I'm looking for die errors ect. Quote

I want one but not if its expensive to me. Quote
RLC35 Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 Gollum,One of the best, low cost scopes, is the Digital Blue QX5. It has magnification of 10x, 60x, and 200x. They were originally made for, and sold at, "toys R Us!" You can find them on eBay for about $50.00. There are two models, the QX3 and the QX5. The 5 is the best, but both work in the same fashion. They have a PC interface, and work with most software systems. I have used mine with Windows Vista, and Windows 7, as well as older versions of windows.I also have the Leuchtturn Microscope, but the QX5 provides a better image than the Leuchtturn. Quote

RLC35 Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 Wow...prices have gone up! I bought mine brand new for $49.95. It's probably worth the price you have quoted though. Quote

Only when I got home did I notice the mint mark error. Quote
