As some of you may know my other hobby is metal detecting, had a couple of hours on a new farm today, first good signal out popped this Charles I Sixpence :D

Never found a hammered sixpence before so I am quite pleased with it despite its condition :D

Nice one! And for added interest, a bit unusual, in that this coin is a mule of the obverse of Group F (Briot's (sixth) bust, North 2246) with the reverse of Group E which features smaller neater cross ends. That probably makes it a fairly early issue in the timeframe for privy mark triangle coins (July 1639 - July 1641).

Tom thanks for the info, if it's not a farthing, I struggle

Congratulations! I have never tried metal detecting, but I can see that the pleasure gained from actually finding coins rather them buying them would be great indeed. That, and placing them in the historical and geographical context that is rarely possible with purchased coins.

You definitely do stop and ponder who dropped it and how, but it is the artefact side that really fascinates me as well..I have found a couple of fibulas and a medieval seal over the years which are very personal items :)

Definitely not a money making venture though :D

Some of my finds from the last few years. A good place for a bit of coin reseatch as well.

Tom I bet there are a few on the main database that may fascinate you :)

Nice. I do have the database bookmarked and check it now and then. But to echo John, if you find any Charles I shillings I'd be interested to see them!
