Just got this and i'm hoping its the one i'm thinking of, the Spink number is 3867A or so i'm hoping. I like the wording next to it, "Extremely Rare" hence opinions needed as there are 2 of the same year, the 3867B, but this one says the G of DG is closer to the crown, which this doesn't look to be, but then again i haven't seen one.

This is the second bust Dave with the G of D:G: closer to the crown. I don't know what Spinks are on but Marsh doesn't list any rarity for 1890 Melbourne Sovs. The 1887 with 2nd bust is however Scarce with a 940,000 mintage.

You sure you're checking the right thing az? The 2005 Spink doesn't even list an 1890M for 3867A, and the Extremely Rare is given for the 1889M

Aye the 2010 book lists it and the 1889 M is normal, definately the correct number as i'm looking at it as i type

Then either the 2005 and earlier editions are wrong, or the recent one is. Or there's a possibility that both are : CCGB doesn't list a rare Melbourne JH sov at all.

For what its worth, my 1997 and 2004 editions of Seaby/Spink don't show anything special about the 1890M sovereign, so it must be identified in later editions.

Or it's an error.

Here is what the 2005 edition lists :

3867A (standard issue) 1887M normal 1889M extremely rare

3867B (DG closer to crown) 1887M 1888M 1889M 1890M all normal

So if the 1890M was suddenly discovered to be rare, what about the 1889M ?

Ok 2009 Spink also lists the 1890M as extremely rare Spink number 3867A but also 87 through to 90

3867B is normal 87 through to 90 (repositioned Legend G of D:G closer to crown, how do we know if its closer to the crown? The one i bought looks distant to me, obviously 2 together would help, or a better picture from Spink or something

It is closer to the crown Dave, 2nd bust as I stated above!

You need to buy a copy of Marsh if you're gonna start to play with sovs. You will find all of the identifiers that Spunk can't be bothered with in there.

I wish I knew more about sovereigns to shed light on this, looks like i'm going to have to get gemmed up a bit here!

Regardless of what type it is, it's still a damn fine looking coin! I like Jubilee issues, especially the gold.
