I remember near the end, around 1991 or so I was sent to the shop with a George V Florin to purchase a bottle of milk (despite my protests that I didn't actually want to spend this), my mother won the argument and it was spent.

Actually, it must have been 1992 (not 1991), I can pin point it to that year because I remember my grandfather had just moved house and it wasn't long after he started working in a junk yard. It was on a trip there that I acquired a 1918 florin from a box full of loose coins (it was full of hundreds of predecimal pennies and florins, shillings, 6ds, 3ds etc. that had all been found here there and everywhere).

As for the one I spent I can't remember the date exactly but what I do know is that it was one of the post-27 design coins, I remember that well because it was the first one of that design i'd ever seen and I wanted it for my set!

I did manage to nag my mother enough that she sent me back on with a Liz II florin hoping to get it swapped, the PO owner checked through the till but it had gone by the time i'd got back. I've always suspected they actually took it out and kept it themselves, I remember them commenting that they hadn't seen one for a long time.

In 1993, however, when the florins were withdrawn I stockpiled a few quids worth of old florins, most were George VI, sadly none were silver.

Don't think of it as stockpiling them Peckris, think more of it as a 'Savings Scheme.'

You collect them from your change and when you find a better example you 'Pay it in' and swap it for the one that you already have and then you 'Withdraw' the other one in into your pocket, thus not only saving you £2 each time but also leaving you with future assets. lol

And if that doesn't convince you I don't know what will. lol

The local coin shop that I go to gives the old £2 coins as change over the past few months I have received a 1986 Commonwealth games £2 and a 1995 Dove of peace in my change. Also a mint looking 2000 £1 coin, my personal theory is that the shop owner opens BU sets to use for change in the till.

A Coin Shop that I used to visit until it recently closed used to do a similar thing David.

The owner used to pull out a bag of £2 Coins and asked if there were any that I needed and if there were, I was given them in my change.

I thought that it was actually quite a good idea. lol

It's just a shame that Coin Shop closed. They had quite a good selection of Decimal Coins.

Also the owner wasn't adverse to opening a Royal Mint Set if there were particular coins that you needed from it. I managed to obtain a few of my BU £2 and 50p Issues that way.

I don't know what else the shop sold, but decimal coins are not a very good basis for a business plan unless you can monopolise the market. The average cost of decimals is too low to make much of an income. When you are selling coins for pence or a few pounds at most, you need to sell too many for it to be cost effective. Mail order would be different, but passing trade would definitely not supply enough customers on a recurring basis.

I haven't seen a Darwin £2 Coin for a little while, and I have only seen one 'Robert Burns' £2 Coin to date. All I seem to see now is almost Mint State 2009 'Technology' £2 Coins. lol

The Shop used to sell everything from Hammered Coins to Pre Decimal Coins (And everything inbetween. lol) The owner always told me the same things that you have said here about Decimal Coins Rob. And for them it was just a way to have some added income when they were sold.

As far as I am aware, the owner only closed the Shop as they were relocating to a different part of the country and they would remain in business.

Sadly, it was the only Coin Shop in my local area which did have a decent range of Decimal Coins, there is another one but it only sells a few Royal Mint Sets. So I now need to find somewhere else to obtain the ones that I would like.

It does really highlight, however, that there is no real secondry market, as such, in modern Decimal Issues. Perhaps in the future that may change.

I was re-reading through this thread and remembered that you had said that 1949.

I don't know if you collect Commemorative 50p Coins as well as Commemorative £2 Coins, or if you have managed to obtain one since you posted your reply, but I have a spare 1992 'Single Market' 50p Coin if it is of any use to you?
