can anyone help with a approx value of a george 111 two penny coin 1797

Anything from scrap to over £1K, it all depends on the condition. You would have to post a picture.

There aren't many worth £1000! I've never seen one. I've got bronzed proof 1797 1d and 2d at the moment, and they are probably worth £1000 for the pair, but they are very special indeed. 99% of them are worth less than £5.

You could change the upper value to £38K ish based on the P1311 in the Evans descendants' sale. :) There's only one of those.

Forget that one.

Must remember not to try to communicate after pub.

Hi

Your 2d is in fact a 1d and in NF condition....value maybe £5 to £12.

All 3 coins appear to have been cleaned...which lowers their values.

Regards

Peter

I was just about to reply when Peter jumped in! Confirm it's a penny. All the coins have been cleaned which is unfortunate, so in that condition I would say, maybe £2-£3; probably worth £8-£9 uncleaned.

I would suggest (without confirming evidence) that bronzed proofs are not the rarest 1797s, though I'd certainly love to have one. I think a genuine BU currency 1797 twopence is incredibly rare (I've never seen one, though I have seen bronzed proofs), and would quite probably realise £1K at least, at auction.

Just as a rider Chris - I do believe your prices for 1797s have always been on the low side! Especially the EF and Unc values.

Yes I think the bronzed proof are the commonest of (all at least 'very rare') proof cartwheels. Do you want it?

I had a nice AUNC, very nearly UNC 2d once. Had a bit of lustre in the low bits and around the inside of the raised rim. A BU circulation piece, that would be pretty much impossible to find!

What do you want for it? (My own currency twopence sounds identical to the one you used to have! I got mine in - I think - 1997 or 1998, when did you offload yours?)

Only a couple of years ago.

£500 for the 2d, or £800 for the 2d and it's bronzed 1d mate. I can have them sent to you on approval if you like. The 1d has slight signs of green, but I don't think it's terminal. Neither seem to have been stored properly and have sweated in PVC causing the odd toning spot. The 1d also has a slight rub on Britannia's breast. The 2d is much better with no wear. They have different allignment, too. I suppose I should get some pics done.

Pictures would be good.

I've seen that those around Fine seem to go for around 15-30 GBP depending on the weather. EKs are of importance as these are the heaviest coins produced for UK circulation - like Pyataks! - 56.7 grams on minting.
