Badger Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 Hi, could anyone advise on a good reference book(s) on tokens? It is for Farthing, Halfpenny and Penny tokens issued in the UK in the 18th and 19th centuries, the ones like the Birmingham 1811 Penny, the many Halfpennies in 1791, 1792 etc, I believe they are called merchant or condor tokens?. Many ThanksBadger Quote

Many ThanksBadgerIf you hunt the second-hand bookshops, Seabys did one in the 60s. It would be useless for values, but you could see comparative rarities, and it would be great for identification. Chris Perkins Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 "The Provincial Token Coinage of the 18th Century" by Messrs Dalton and Hamer is the one to get. There are various imprints, many of them US publications. They show a rarity scale, no values, but it's pretty comprehensive.Or, "The Silver Token Coinage" for the rarer silver tokens, this one is by Dalton on his own.Or for something more up to date (as a rarity scale....again, no values) have a look here:http://www.unsogno.net/conders/bibliography.htmSearch that page for 'Sriro'. That's Dr G Sriro, who is very up on those tokens! I used to sell his CD's before he paniced after one got put on ebay and then he pulled the plug. I don't know if that 2006 info is still current, or even if he's still selling it. Quote
£400 for a Penny ? Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 I've got Dalton & Hamer on the shelf next to me, if that's any help ? Quote
Chris Perkins Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 What to sell? If so, I'll have it. Quote
Badger Posted December 4, 2009 Author Posted December 4, 2009 Hi all, thank you very much for your recommendations. The full 5 parts of the Dalton and Hamer is around $1000 and the Seaby 2nd edition is around $60 so I guess the Seaby one is the one to start with! The web sites are great too, thanks for those. The book is for a friend who has a lot of these tokens and wanted something to identify them with, I'm sure he will be very happy with all sites and books. Many Thanks to allBadger Quote

£400 for a Penny ? Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 The full 5 parts of the Dalton and Hamer is around $1000Oh, come now, surely not ?I once had a copy of Major LL Gordon before it was reprinted that I bought for £60 and sold for £1 because of the reprint, but you're not telling me that my £20 snaffle is worth $1000 ?So much of todays pricing is ambitious to say the least.Sometimes I wonder who's in charge of the bus and where the cliff is....Rgds, Quote
