Peckris Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 HI Guys, can someone tell me what is it? I tried to find in SPINK without result. Many thanksIt could be :either a brass gaming token - these were common in the 18th and 19th Centuries, usually featuring imitation gold coins of George III or Victoria, either with a false (i.e. impossible) date, or a spurious legend. Not sure I ever remember seeing a William III example though.or it is a brass coin weight. The legend "1/2 GVINEA W" would make that a strong candidate. Quote
Rob Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 It looks like a guinea weight to me. Contact Paul Withers at Galata for more info, he's into them big time. Quote
Guest Richard Posted August 16, 2017 Posted August 16, 2017 Hello, I have also found one of these coins, any idea how old it is and if it is of any value? 1 Quote
VickySilver Posted August 16, 2017 Posted August 16, 2017 Not a coin as per above with only nominal (IMO) value to some collectors as a guinea weight. None for me though.... Quote
Ukstu Posted August 16, 2017 Posted August 16, 2017 (edited) Its a brass half guinea coin weight of William III. They where used to check the weight of a real half guinea as counterfeits were rife in them days. Dates to between 1690- 1702. Value is anywhere between £25- £50. Thats roughly what they sell for on eBay. People do collect them so if you put it on eBay with a buy it now price it will likely sell. Seems to have some good detail to it so it will sell easily i think. Nice find Edited August 16, 2017 by Ukstu Quote
