I am having trouble identifying certain bronze Pennies, I have an 1861 penny but I have know idea what variety it is apart from it has a toothed border. The Spinks 2006 Coins of England book has 7 pages dedicated to the penny but I am still lost.

Can anyone help me out here, also would you say the grade is Fine?.

Thanks, all help is appreciated

I tried to post something on this last night, but for some reason the software wouldn't play ball. Although the scan is rather dark, I believe it to be obverse 6, reverse D aka F29, although to be fair I wouldn't stake my life on it (especially since the lower part of the reverse is almost entirely dark). This is one of the more common varieties in what was an abundant year. You are however correct in saying that the coin is approximately Fine.

Go ahead, Stake your life on it.... That's exactly what it is..... Obverse 6, Reverse D, F-29.... UNLESS it's a 6/8, which I don't think it is........ or a Proof F-31, which is unlikely.......

But it IS an Obverse 6, Reverse D.....

Thank you both for identifying and confirming the coin for me.

I have just ordered 'THE BRONZE COINAGE OF GREAT BRITAIN BY MICHAEL J FREEMAN - 2006 SPINKS EDITION' I have heard that this book is a must to any GB coin collector.

Thanks again

I agree. Even if you don't want to start collecting Bronze varieties it is still a great book to have as a reference.
