Hussulo Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 Yeh I followed it on eBay too. I'm not sure about it as well. I know trials were struck in various metals and even on leather, but I'v never heard of the mint using plastic.Anyone else know? Quote
Coins4u Posted August 1, 2007 Author Posted August 1, 2007 I was just talking to a coin dealer today and she said that because of the short period of his reign it probably wouldent be a souvenier from the time. Quote
Rob Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 What type of plastic is it? There were very few plastics known in 1937, so it will be possible to give a no earlier than date of manufacture Quote
Chingford Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 I have found a reference to a uniface Threepence piece in 'Toy Coins' by Rogers, described as a Edward VIII replica made for collectorsI have copied it out as typed.1035. Threepence Brown plastic 22mm 2mm thick. 12 sided plain edge. UnifaceEDWARDVS VIII D:G:BR:OMN:REX F:D:IND:IMP: Stuck to a circular white card: a cast from the rare brass ThreepenceMaker was Fred J Jeffery of Melksham, Wilts, it is noted that he also produced wooden farthings circa 1966John Quote
E Dawson Posted August 2, 2007 Posted August 2, 2007 Nice job on with the research. I think these are nothing but toys and would not be interested even WITH confirmation from the mint of their "pattern" status. Quote
Chingford Posted August 2, 2007 Posted August 2, 2007 I had an email from his son this morning confirming they were made by his father in the sixties, I've pasted an extract below.Hi,Thanks for your enquiry. My father, F. J. Jeffery, had these made back in the late 1960's. They were the obverse only replica of the rare Edward VIII Brass Threepence of 1937, cast from an original coin in resin. I am sorry I don't have any further information than that, and we no longer have any examples I'm afraid. Hope this information will be of some use to you. Let me know if I can help you further.Kind regards,Richard J. Jeffery,F J JEFFERY & SON LTD.John Quote
