I am trying to remember the name of the renowned 19th/20th century copiest. I keep coming back to van Arsell, but I can find no reference to him on the usual Google or Ask sites. I know that a lot of his coins were for sale on e-bay last year. Anyone know him?

Wasn't there an Ashford doing all kinds of good copies once?

Posted

Thanks Chris. That was the man I was thinking of. I see that the spate of sales of his coins has stopped. I believe his work is quite in demand in it's own right?

Yes, I wanted to get my hands on one of his fakes for my fake collection, but missed out. I probably have at least one already, but just don't know it yet.

The reason Ashford was such an great forger was because he actually used ancient silver etc. to mint his coins. He used worn coins as planchets for his new coins, and he made his own dies as opposed to casting the coins.

Wasn't it Ashmore ?....or is it very late on a Sunday evening and Abbot Ale has minced my brain. :o

Indeed I think your right Peter!

I remember reading an article on him in the past. Anyway found a seller selling a few of his coins on ebay at the moment for anyone interested.

Yes, I'm familiar with those Czech people.

They do nice work, but I am afraid too nice, and with the small countermark, these will easily pass on eBay as the real thing if not already.

Yep, and notice that private bidder detail of the auction. Obviously this seller saw the Syra and still sold it as an original.

Of course it is practically impossible to discern how to report counterfeit coins to eBay.

Your theory has a lot of truth in it scottishmoney:
