Geordie582 Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 I am trying to remember the name of the renowned 19th/20th century copiest. I keep coming back to van Arsell, but I can find no reference to him on the usual Google or Ask sites. I know that a lot of his coins were for sale on e-bay last year. Anyone know him? Quote
muygrandeoso Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 The only one I can recall is Carl Wilhelm Becker, but I think he did mostly Greek and Roman. Quote
Chris Perkins Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 Wasn't there an Ashford doing all kinds of good copies once? Quote
Geordie582 Posted June 23, 2007 Author Posted June 23, 2007 Thanks Chris. That was the man I was thinking of. I see that the spate of sales of his coins has stopped. I believe his work is quite in demand in it's own right? Quote
Chris Perkins Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 Yes, I wanted to get my hands on one of his fakes for my fake collection, but missed out. I probably have at least one already, but just don't know it yet. Quote
scottishmoney Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 Also think Peter Rosa got involved with some of this. Quote
Hussulo Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 The reason Ashford was such an great forger was because he actually used ancient silver etc. to mint his coins. He used worn coins as planchets for his new coins, and he made his own dies as opposed to casting the coins. Quote
Peter Posted June 24, 2007 Posted June 24, 2007 Wasn't it Ashmore ?....or is it very late on a Sunday evening and Abbot Ale has minced my brain. Quote
Hussulo Posted June 24, 2007 Posted June 24, 2007 Wasn't it Ashmore ?....or is it very late on a Sunday evening and Abbot Ale has minced my brain. Indeed I think your right Peter!I remember reading an article on him in the past. Anyway found a seller selling a few of his coins on ebay at the moment for anyone interested.Ebay link Quote
Hussulo Posted June 26, 2007 Posted June 26, 2007 (edited) Geordie found this site.link click hereThey make their own hammered replica coins. Scarily and worryingly accurate! Edited June 26, 2007 by Hussulo Quote
Chris Perkins Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 Yes, I'm familiar with those Czech people. Quote
scottishmoney Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 They do nice work, but I am afraid too nice, and with the small countermark, these will easily pass on eBay as the real thing if not already. Quote
Hussulo Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 (edited) Your theory has a lot of truth in it scottishmoney:eBay linkYou can but these for $36 on Antiquanova.Link Edited June 27, 2007 by Hussulo Quote
scottishmoney Posted June 27, 2007 Posted June 27, 2007 Yep, and notice that private bidder detail of the auction. Obviously this seller saw the Syra and still sold it as an original.Of course it is practically impossible to discern how to report counterfeit coins to eBay. Quote

scottishmoney Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 It just shouts the seller is a red flagger. Quote
