Chris Perkins Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 Are there not 2 types of 1990 small 5p's, one with a sharp rim, the other rounded? (much like the first small 10p varieties?)I seem to remember that being the case, but can find no reference and I don't have enough 5p's to check! Quote
nik a tron Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 yea there are two types of 1990 5ps and ive checked ones got a sharp edge and some others have slightly rounded edges. Quote
Chris Perkins Posted February 14, 2007 Author Posted February 14, 2007 Are you able to make pictures? Quote
nik a tron Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 no sorry i cant do pictures but you could get lots of change and check for them and you will see. Quote
Chris Perkins Posted February 14, 2007 Author Posted February 14, 2007 Yes I could, if I were in the UK! Quote
nik a tron Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 go to a bank and exchange it for british 5ps Quote
Chris Perkins Posted February 14, 2007 Author Posted February 14, 2007 What planet do you live on Nik a Tron? You're quite young and naive aren't you.You can't exchange coins in most Bureau de Change places. They just take notes, they don't want to keep tons of world coins in stock. I can safely say that there are no quantities of 5p's within about a 500 mile radius of my house! Quote
nik a tron Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 alright then i cant help then.alright then i cant help then.alright then i cant help then.alright then i cant help then. sorry i put two on.mabye in a couple of days i could get you a picture. Quote
TomGoodheart Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 Damn! This seems to be the disadvantage of storing my 'minor' collection in drawers, jean pockets and at the bottom of rucksacks! While I have found two round edge 5ps the sharp one is eluding me. I don't have a camera either so have tried scanning the edge but with little success. So if it's any use at all Chris I'm happy to post you a round edge 1990 5p which you can then photograph at your leisure. Just let me know. I'll keep looking for the sharp one just in case too!Richardnik. Half term is it? Only joking! We all had to start somewhere (and early Georgian bronze certainly is an ambitious start!). Welcome to the forum! If you get a camera or access to a scanner I'm sure we'd all love to see your aquisitions to date. Just remember, there are always coins but money runs out! Take your time! Chris Perkins Posted February 14, 2007 Author Posted February 14, 2007 I'm not sure that there is a 1990 sharp edge coin. The later ones seem to have sharp edges, but I think perhaps all 1990 have rounded edges. Quote
coin watch Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 I have noticed many times that the edge to the new 5p`s and 10p`s have differing edge rims but do they really qualify as being a `variety` or `type`.I would have thought that it was just the wear in the milling process, like you get with some brand new coins being better struck than others. Geordie582 Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 Blast! Now I have something else to look for in my wife's change purse> Quote
Gary D Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 Here's a rounded 1990 5p. I guess it's a bit like the chamfered rim 1911 2/6 proof and 1/- but a bit more chamfered. Quote
Chris Perkins Posted February 14, 2007 Author Posted February 14, 2007 But is there really also a square edge 1990 small 5p? Has someone got one? Quote
Chris Perkins Posted February 15, 2007 Author Posted February 15, 2007 Are those 1990? If so, it proves it, because they're square. Quote
nik a tron Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 i told you chris that you do get them. Quote
Chris Perkins Posted February 15, 2007 Author Posted February 15, 2007 I need to see it with my own eyes! 2 1990 coins side by side showing an angle that shows the date and the edges at the same time!Of you have both types of 1990 5p nic a tron I'll give you £1 for them (inc postage). Quote
josie Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Yes it is 1990 5pence.Saw 1991 rounded edge, but 1992 onwards square it seems that 1990 have both but also maybe 1991 for 1992 onwards on coins that I have is sharp and square like.Didnt seen any difference on the die on obverse and reverse. Chris Perkins Posted February 15, 2007 Author Posted February 15, 2007 Thanks Josie.I'm in the UK next week so I'm going to collect 5p's and see what I find. Quote
Peter Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 I've just checked 20 1990's and they were all rounded. So if the square exist chances are they will be fairly rare. Quote
nik a tron Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 chris if you want at the weekend i will put a picture on and show you. Quote
Chris Perkins Posted February 15, 2007 Author Posted February 15, 2007 No it should be ok, I can gather some myself in England next week. Quote
josie Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 I wonder what is the ratio for the 2 type.Mine is 6:1 if the coin I post is square. How about you nik? Quote
