Help wanted,

Can any of the experts out there identify the coin in the attached photo. Its hammered, very thin, and about 14mm across. Ugly looking begger on the obverse isn' he!!

Thanks.

There are a few hammered buffs on the forums, hopefully they'll spot this one!

See this link for the legend: MONETA LODOVICI / REGIS HUNGARI

So it's a Hungarian coin of Louis I 1342-1382 AD., Saracen's head / Double barred cross .

Thanks for the challenge!

Tom! Did the Hungarians produce any syphate coins? I'm still looking for an origin for the coin I use as my avatar, the reverse shows a similar double cross.

Ah! I'm still working on that one Geordie (though slowly!) I'm still assuming earlier than the 1300s but....!

I presume you read my claim that it is a 'mark' of King Arthur? :P

Yes! I can see the design is really the sword coming out of the stone now! ;)

Many thanks for the rapid and authoritative responses. I have had this coin for some years now, and have not, until now, been able to identify it.

Once again thanks to all for the advice - now I need to look up Louis I of Hungary!
