Depends upon the condition really, if it's a really battered one which is very worn, clipped, chipped or bent/creased then you'd be looking at £10 max.

In average condition with mostly readable legends, and a prominent portrait (even if it's a little weak) you'd be looking at anything upto £30, it might have some very slight creasing.

For an absolute top condition coin, pretty much showing full detail as struck (as far as this is possible with Queen Mary groats) you'd be looking at considerably more.

The vast majority that i've encountered however fall just below average, and very very often some way below.

If you could put up a picture i could give you a much better idea of the grade and a much more accurate price.

Thankyou, I will try and get photos to you. can I email them to you as I do not know how to put the photos on the forum?

Jon, If you register, you can attach a file to a forum post. It doesn't matter if you never return as I delete members that do not use the forum after 40 days or so.

Thanks, I will try and add some photos later tonight.

I might be around on here later, but i've got some stuff to do first, if i get back then i'll give you a rough idea of the value.

I'm trying to send a photo of the other side...it came up with an error message about the type of file...confusing as the last pic. was the same type...fingers crossed it works this time round...

sorry it says I can't upload this file type...don't really understand....anyone know what I can do? Thanks, Jon.

That side doesn't look too bad, slightly uneven creased flan, v chip on one side, some other small chips. All in all not too bad, i've seen a hell of alot worse!

I'll have to reserve judgement though till i've seen the other side... the important one!

I'm sure Chris will be along later, and he might know what to do!

It's a little faded on the face but then I guess it would be as that's the important side.

It's just that the wear shows more on the obverse, and the overall quality of strike of the piece is also most evident on the obverse.

A little faded sounds fairly promising... quite often you can only figure out the outline of the portrait, or less!

I could probably email you a picture if you like but I cannot seem to send any other photos. I think the files maybe to big.

I'll PM you with an email address!

hi i have what i think is a mary tudor groat how do i tell if it is genuine or a fake?

Posted

I'd say it's probably very unlikely to be fake, unless it looks too nice to be true. You'll have to show us a picture.

sorry havent got a picture of it. but i picked it up at a car boot sale for 5p andive seen around that there worth about 30 pounds so i guess i cant believe my luck!

its in very good condition you can clearly see queen marys head and the coat of arms on the reverse and the legend is very readable with no cchips or scratches around the edging.

Crikey! 5p!!!

Even if it was fake you'd probably get more than 5p for it... alright about a quid or so.

But i'd say you'd got a bargin for 5p.

Does the legend actually say Maria on the front? If so then it Mary.

yes the front has got maria on it. the reverse legend is veritas tempo filia which i believe in english is "truth, the daughter of time" which im told is what should be on mary tudor coins. am i right?

Everyone seems to have great condition coins, the fact these appear without pictures helps no one, so if you can post pictures of your coins and then people can help you, otherwise we're pissing in the wind

Members can send messages to each other via the forum, so it's not necessary to include your email address in posts.

However, if you want an opinion on a coin, a photo is pretty much essential!

I really love the Mary coinage, the groats are especially pretty, everyone should have one!

There are some copies around, do post a picture, it would be great to see them!

I found this yesterday metal detecting. I'm pretty sure it's Mary. I can make out CIVI TASK LONDON one side and DG ROSA SINE on the other. It's different to other silver hammered I have found as there is no head of a King or Queen. Any help with an i'd would be appreciated.
