Paddy Posted March 3 Posted March 3 I was just comparing my various 1723 silver coins when I noticed something odd about the 3 in the sixpence date. I checked ESC, which mentions a 3 over 0, but this doesn't look anything like that. Any thoughts? 1 Quote
Coinery Posted March 3 Posted March 3 I’m not overly familiar with the numerals and serifs of the series, but is there any possibility it’s die-fill, or does that throw the shape of the number too much? Quote
Paddy Posted March 3 Author Posted March 3 That could be a good shout. My 1723 shilling has damage just at the critical point, but here is the 3 from my much better half crown. I can see that the sixpence 3 appearance could be due to a chunk missing. 2 Quote
Rob Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago It will probably be a reworked 1717 reverse die. I wrote about mine on p.806 of the acquisition thread and another point where we had quite a lengthy discussion involving brg658 about this. More than one die may be involved, but it looks conclusive on the two coins mentioned in that discussion. There are at least a few die pairs, but haven't had time to pursue the maximum number I can identify. Quote
