Citizen H Posted January 12 Posted January 12 (edited) Hello all, with this coin I have held back with showing, its in much better condition and have always question if its a copy? this I believe to be 40 Pence Scotland Charles I 1625-49, XL 3rd coinage ? another thing that whilst I looked in to the service of this coin Falconers and Briots I've seen mentioned but still need to know more, is this mint related? please advise. again I think it was a boot fair around the 90's it was a mixed of 1950's and foreign coinage, so not a big purchase........... maybe as much as 50p. please do have a look and see what you think, many thanks "H" Edited January 12 by Citizen H Quote
Sword Posted January 12 Posted January 12 Agree with the above. The details are too crude and deep. 1 Quote
copper123 Posted January 12 Posted January 12 You just have to look at the coin to see it's not been hammered ,its totally centred just like hammered coins never are, the details are to sharp and there are no week spots on hammering - unlike any genuine hammered coin.. 1 Quote
Citizen H Posted January 12 Author Posted January 12 (edited) Awwwwwwwwwwww! bummer! oh well 50p ventured nothing gained and hence why it was buried in a mix change lot, aww well another day...another dollar.... copper123 Posted January 13 Posted January 13 (edited) Its quite a common thing to put a mixed lot on ebay mostly rubbish with a gothic crown fake, or Edward Viii penny in a prominent position to tempt the unwary - no surprise its happening in car boots now as well . They always state "No returns" Edited January 13 by copper123 1 Quote
scottishmoney Posted January 13 Posted January 13 Sure have to love Scottish denominations ie 40d. Largely a result of debasing the coinage and then revaluing it. England was fortunate that debasement only happened during the reign of Henry VIII - and the crown went back on the sterling standard early in the reign of Edward VI. In Scotland debasements started late in the 14th century and continued right up until the reign of Charles I when the currency was brought back to a fixed standard of 12:1 or briefly 13:1 during the late 17th century. 2 Quote
