lady_of_leasure Posted May 15, 2005 Posted May 15, 2005 I have just been given a load of old coins and i have found one that i am not sure of. Please can anyone let me know what it is. Quote
TomGoodheart Posted May 15, 2005 Posted May 15, 2005 This appears to be a third coinage (1619-25) quarter-laurel (=crown (v or 5 shillings)) of James I. It appears to have a spur-rowel (star) mint mark (the small mark placed at the edge of hammered coins which identifies when they were issued) dating it to 1619-20. See Spink Coins of England S2642It isn't uncommon for coins to have been pierced though it reduces their attractiveness (and value) somewhat.Hope that helps Quote
Sylvester Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 Certainly looks like a Quarter Laurel (or 5 shilling piece [aka gold Crown] hence the V behind the king). The piercing will reduce the value quite a bit as many collectors simply do not like it. But having said that hammered gold coins are always popular.Value on such a piece is difficult to give, a conservative estimate without the hole would have been about £140, but taking into account the hole it really depends on the buyer, some might pay upto £100, realistically i'd say about £80-£90.I used to have one unholed in slightly better condition (albeit cleaned which reduced the value) and that booked between £170-£220 tops, different dealers quoted different prices for the piece, so the market on these is quite fluid. Peter Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 Authentic 17C Bling.I'm sure in years to come collectors will treat the current "Sovereign ring brigade" with the same contempt.PSWhat is the rarest coin you've seen mutilated?Colin Cooke once told me a complete Victorian series of UNC farthings had been inherited by a "handyman" who promptlypolished them and then screwed each one onto a display board.
