Unwilling Numismatist Posted October 15, 2019 Posted October 15, 2019 Changechecker haven't told Joe Public about the second rarest 50p hiding in plain site, so I've been trying to stockpile them. 2009 Kew gardens - 210,000 2017 Royal Shield - 1,800,000 2017 Sir Isaac Newton - 1,801,500 {the rest} Quote

I just said that the 2017 Shield was missing, until today. Quote
Sword Posted October 15, 2019 Posted October 15, 2019 I thought you implied in the OP that the 2017 Royal Shield is the second rarest 50p? But quite a few others have lower mintages. Quote

I get the blame for everything at home dont start on here aswell Might be a daft question but if they list mintage figures of coins from circulation why do they leave the olympics off please ? Unfortunately my post was untimely in the fact that the mintage figures were released yesterday and just about everybody knows the new ones today.(yesterday now) Quote

It's just there are 29 olympic 50p coins. They will just dominate the table if all are included. The abridged table shows a wider range of dates and types. Some previous tables from changechecker have included them. Quote
damian1986 Posted October 15, 2019 Posted October 15, 2019 What are the figures for BU coins issued, do we know? I understand these are just for-circulation numbers? If they issued 1.4 million for circulation they must have done an absolute shitload on top of that in BU packs and change-checker cards. 50k, 100k, ... ? Quote
Unwilling Numismatist Posted October 16, 2019 Author Posted October 16, 2019 Some commemorative figures are produced here but I think they're still working on getting more completed. It's taking a while. Quote
bagerap Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 I think that the reason the 2017 Shield will be a sleeper in numismatic circles is that Joe Public is only looking for short term gain commemoratives. Shield coins have no interest to commemorative collectors. BUNC 2017 shields will hopefuly do well enough in the next decade to make storing them worthwhile. Quote
JLS Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 I'm pretty sure anyone who buys these in quantity and holds them rather than flipping is going to be burnt pretty badly at some point. The mintage figures are just too high for collector demand alone to be causing the prices we see. A lot of the proof sets have mintages of 5,000 or below, but they haven't seen the crazy demand and price increases the 50 pences have - which to me suggests that the actual number of serious decimal collectors is pretty low, as you'd only need a relatively small number of people to make these expensive. 1 Quote
