Guest Bunter Posted September 4, 2018 Posted September 4, 2018 I see there are several good photographs of 1865/3 Pennies online, especially Michael Gouby's website. But I have not found very much on 1865/3 Half Pennies and what the date looks like on these coins. Could this 1865 Half Penny be a 1865/3 overdate? Quote

Rob Posted September 4, 2018 Posted September 4, 2018 I was going to say no because I can't see the diagonal running down from the end of the 5 Quote
mrbadexample Posted September 4, 2018 Posted September 4, 2018 I was looking at the bit sticking out of the end of the 5 which appears to match this one: http://www.londoncoins.co.uk/?page=Pastresults&auc=146&searchlot=2317&searchtype=2 I can't see the diagonal on that one either. Quote
Peckris 2 Posted September 4, 2018 Posted September 4, 2018 I'm not so sure. The second stroke of the "3" is too sharply angled towards what would be the top stroke? Quote
Bronze & Copper Collector Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 (edited) These are my 2 examples of the halfpenny overdate.. 1865/3 halfpenny 5 over small 3 Edited September 5, 2018 by Bronze & Copper Collector 1 Quote

Bronze & Copper Collector Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 Very clear and obvious overdates.... Can't really be too sure about the others from images only.... Quote
Bunter15 Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 (edited) Thanks very much everyone for your comments. Looking at the London Coins website, the common denominator seems to be the thick top shaft of the 5 and/or the little bubble on the end of the bottom sweep of the 5 - which matches the bottom of the 3 in the 1863 half pennies. I've had another look at my 1865 half pennies and found a couple of other possibles, I'd appreciate if you could let me know what you think of these? Peckris 2 Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 The first example is clearly a double strike so I'd discount that. The second is rather faint so I'd not like to say. The third though looks like it could be, especially as there's traces of the down stroke and also something is going on with the loop of the 5 (though that could equally just be damage). Quote
Bunter15 Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 Thanks Pecktris, I appreciate you taking the time to have a look. Quote
