It's alright for some people. Liiving in East Anglia you must be spoilt for choice for both venue, and also what you find. All you will find with a metal detector around here is industrial detritus from the past 250 years.

Great picture.I have a Garrett 250. It can be difficult to get permissions.20 yrs ago was much easier. A chap I know used to slip the foreman a drink on new housing sites and filled his boots up. His cabinet of finds was jaw dropping.

I am on the brink of making the jump and getting a Garrett 400i. I have a few small permissions in place (about 10 acres all in) but I am hoping I can gain the trust of a few farmers once I have got some feedback from these land owners to get me on 1 or 2 bigger permissions.

been detecting around 12 years now, i wish it were that easy down in sarf essex, lots of people looking for permission on limited land, and we have many a barren field this way, same as everywhere, i started off on beaches and in woods, although you need permission in woods even, did the local parks, not strictly legal as you need permission again, but i stayed out the way and filled holes and kept to evenings and early mornings, i put myself about a bit after a while, writing letters etc, i got a couple of yes's and never looked back, some of the older crowed have 1000's of acres stitched up that no one can get permission on, and they never show the landowners a thing, i got lucky because one guy i wrote to owned several farms and that led me to meeting and getting to know an agricultural contractor who hooked me up with a few other people, i have other people detecting on my permissions so there not all exclusive to me, some are,  i have lost farms to other people or the farmer gets funny because you show him everything and let them have what they want and then they think your still having it away, i always record my finds with the portable antiquities scheme and report anything that falls within the 1996 treasure act , there's always plenty of digs around the country you can go on, and quite a few clubs who have deals with farmers,  i'm also lucky to have the Thames pretty much at the bottom of my road, and often go into the city to forage around the foreshore, again you need a permit from the port of london authority or be a member of the Society of Mudlarks

suffolk, nice area for detecting, my kids live in felixstowe,   lots of roman and saxon that way, friend of mine found a saxon burial not far from sutton hoo a couple of years ago, brooches etc, they reckon the metal work came out the same workshop as the sutton hoo stuff as its about the same time, i'm not at liberty to give the exact village it was found in
