Hi all,

these pics were posted following a detecting rally in my neck of the woods - South East Wales-this week-end, and purport to show two Saxon coins found by one individual. These would be a very rare find for this area, but I am suspicious of the style and condition, they look like modern fakes to me. What do you guys think? Fraudster trying to create a provenance, or remarkable (treasure) discovery?

Jerry

Look good to me. A Pointed Helmet of Hereford (not the commonest) and a Sovereign Eagles of Winchester (I think - needs a clean).

Presumably found close together? The two types followed each other chronologically and look kosher, so I don't thiink there is any reason to be suspicious.

Yeah. Though not my series, these have all the characteristics of hammered coins in terms of sharpness of the design etc and are clearly different from the modern replicas you see on places like eBay.

Looks like two very nice finds to me. I'm jealous of the finder ...

..though not to the extent I'm tempted to get up at the crack of dawn on my days off to cart a heavy load of kit around a muddy field !

. :D

Thanks all, I hope the finder reports them....
