  1. Why can't I edit anything I have written????? The above should read .......when I haven't got the cash........
  2. Hi Pete, Yes still about and hoping to be for a long time. Really enjoying the hobby and enjoying exploring all avenues of collecting. Got inspired a bit by Nordle's error collection so just seeing what I have and putting them to one side. Also a possibly cheap side collection for when I have got the cash to get the coins I am sourcing for the main collection. It has also made me look closer at coins which can only be a good thing. Cheers Brian
  3. Just found another error penny. This time in a bag of odds and ends GB predecimal pennies I bid and won at the Tyneside NS yesterday. I also found a couple of fine- VF 1915 recessed ears so not a bad buy. Anyway, could some one enlighten me on what this error would be called. Thanks
  4. By the way thanks all. Loving the coins and the knowledgebase behind the errors!
  5. Here is a one I have, decimal 5p so not quite the same. I have picked up quite a few anomalies in the more modern decimal coinage across numerous denominations and years. I have added a normal 5p for reference. So what would this error be classed as?
  6. Here is the full obverse.
  7. As a "new collector" (after coming back after 20+ years away from the hobby) I am always intrigued at the discussion's regarding what people regard as collectable and novalties. I love a bit of everything from variants to die flaws, expecially in bronze coinage which is my main avenue of collecting. I do not have many but have studied loads of images online. I would love to see more as this unusual die flaws and quirks maybe a side collection I may take up in the future. I recently aquired a reasonable 1911 penny, about VF so nothing special; to be honest I thought it was a Gouby X but as usual it wasn't. Anyway it has a nice unusual break in the "B" of BRITT so thought I would let you all have a look. Maybe of no interest to some, but I like it. Would like to see other peoples, clogged dies, etc.. as I am sure there are some fantastic ones out there.
  8. Fantastic analogy and well thought out. I like all aspects of coin collecting and variants particularly. The point at which the line is drawn will always be different for different collectors. For me a die repair can be a real joy to find as it gives a history and story to the overall coinage process. My initial post has been brilliantly shown with your photos and to me is a variant, but I can understand other peoples reluctance. I am finding this whole discussion really interesting especially seeing so many different peoples views. Shows once again the diversity that is coin collecting.
  9. I know it has been said before but its times like this you realise how much knowledge and passion there is on this forum for coin collecting. Also very envious re the 1903 open 3's guys. I am struggling to find even one passable example. Thanks for the knowledge. I am now digging back through all my 1895-1905 pennies!!!!!! cheers Brian
  10. Just checked all my 1902 pennies, 27 in total ranging from good to unc. all are curved.
  11. Very interesting. All of mine are curved. Will bust out my other low level spares and see what I can find amongst them.
  12. Thanks Pete, totally appreciate that
  13. I like to research things before I jump in which is why I asked the question. I have just been looking at as many 1902 LT pennies as I could find. Out of about 60+ I found online I have found 3 others with the very same anomaly. As you say it is probably just a die break, but interesting!
  14. The reason I asked is that the raised section under the "0" is very straight. Surely if it had been a flake it would be less uniform. You could be right but always worth an ask to get other opinion's. Always keeping my fingers crossed that I may find something new and interesting
  15. Jerry did you use the gel or the liquid. Just curious. Nice demonstration by the way. Thanks
  16. Hi All Just got a nice 1902 Low Tide Penny, the wife actually allowed me to spend a little more than normal as a treat. I am a very lucky boy!! When I was putting it into a coin capsule I noticed a raised section under the top of the 0 in the date. Is this normal? I have added a few pics of the coin, not very good pics, but hopefully you will see what I mean. Thanks Brian
  17. I decided to have a try of a heat gun, my wifes craft one. I got a few naff coins, polished them then rinsed and cleaned them and left them over night. The following day I got out the gun. My first mistake was to use a jar lid, after heating both sides I have actually silvered the coin. It looks lovely but now looks silver plated still with a high gloss. The next I did on a rack, although it did slightly mute the sheen it didn't make any real marked improvement. maybe I am doing it wrong. At least I know a cheap and effective way of giving old worthless coins a nice shiny silver coating so a win there =D
  18. I had never heard of it before so have been doing some digging. It is predominately used in Jewellery making and uses a chemical reaction rather than a layer or film on the coin/bronze. Think I may invest in some and try it out on a few cheap coins to see how it goes. I noted that the gel form is said to be more stable so lasts longer. Will probably order some next week and do some experimentation. Its purely out of interest and I am now really intrigued.
  19. Here is the reverse.
  20. Here is an example. Victoria 1888 Halpenny.
  21. Think this has probably been asked before, but is there a way of retoning or dulling down cleaned coins. I have recently been given a load of old copper, all fantastic pieces, but unfortunately cleaned. My son has also got quite a few given to him today. The coins have no scratching, so think they have been dipped. There are a number of really detailed Victoria bun head pennies and half pennies as well as a number of really good George V pennies. Is it just a case of time? Thanks all.
  22. I had my first visit today to the Tyneside NS and was pleasantly suprised. The members were a friendly bunch with a wide variety of interests. It was nice to be able to talk to someone face to face and also talk about things that I was interested in without the old "he's off again" type attitude. I think from my first experience I will definately being going back and have already paid my membership fee's. The auction at the end of the meeting was interesting and worthwhile, only wish I had taken some money with me, although the wife wouldn't have been overly pleased. I think there is definately a place for both the online and offline groups as it is also great to be able to put a face to the person you are getting to know. I have had the chance to talk to and get to know a number of members on here so far and would go so far to say i would call them friends. I hope that will be the same with the Tyneside NS, which I am sure it will. Lots of great characters and like many on here loads of knowledge from many years of collecting. Thanks to Nutsaboutcoins for introducing me to the group.

  25. Hi Dan, Welcome to the Forum. I only recently came back to the hobby as well, very similar story, without all the running!!!! I have found this group a fantastic place to learn with brilliant people willing to help and advise. Also had members who have helped me out with coins, they know who they are and I am very grateful. I had been looking for somehwere I felt comfortable and was able to talk about my hobby with like minded friendly people and found it right here. So pleased I joined the forum. I have been inspired by the fantastic coins and collection's and have managed to find my niche, although if something else comes up I like the look of and can afford I still get them. Enjoy and hope to talking to you on the forums. Regards Brian
