I have heard that Cu penny and two penny coins were used as one and two oz. weights which would have saved them from being circulated.

Nice coin. What grade was allocated to this coin?
-
TPG again. Judge the coin on its merits. In particular pay attention to the excelent book on grading british coins produced by predecimal.com and make your own judgement. IMO with reference to the book on grading I think the coin has been under graded by NGC . No worries remove the coin from its slab and enjoy. It seems, in some people's mindset that when a coin is graded by a TPG it has been branded for all time. When in fact it is an opinion by a system that is littered with inconsistencies that can be easily rectified by the means suggested above.
-
An example of the product of NGC's exhaustive procedures. The whole concept of TPG is consistency which so far has not been achieved. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Great-Britain-George-V-Florin-1915-KM817-MS63-NGC/192366387787?hash=item2cc9ee224b:g:UC4AAOSwTQtaDdod

Nice coin perhaps undergraded. Here in Australia we do not pay GST and duty for items under $800.

Buy the coin not the slab! -
A 100 year old coin still bright that hasn't been cleaned in some way unlikely. Perhaps the question should be how carefully was it cleaned?
-
Yes. I doubt if it will do any good. A large response from members of this forum may produce a more positive result.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1829-HALF-CROWN-/172806982068?hash=item283c1949b4:g:t8wAAOSwGrNZhLNm Another copy the seller hasn't even described it as such. In my book a deliberate attempt to deceive. The only saving grace is the quality of the copy is so bad that it would not fool an experienced collector. However perhaps a less experienced collector could be. In any case items such as this are against EBay's listing rules and should be removed.

Replica Coins on Ebay
ozjohn replied to ozjohn's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Fantasy coins for the most part are Edward & George double florins which never existed as coins minted as legal tender so probably do not qualify as replicas. As for 1952 & 1933 pennies most people are aware that these coins are rare as rocking horse #### and very unlikely to be genuine but should be marked as copies. My real problem is with copies of circulation coins that are not marked as copy/replica although described as such being sold on Ebay etc and then being offered as genuine by a third party seller which have the potential to deceive. I have to say I am very reluctant to bid on George 111 and Victoria YH halfcrowns because of this. -
http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/currstamps.html After a little digging on Ebay.co.uk I found the above link. which may or not work. . However if you go to this page from Ebay it outlines the Ebay rules for listing replica coins and in essence it says that replica coins are not allowed on Ebay unless the item marked to show it is a replica in a way such as it cannot be removed ie stamped on the coin. Simply describing the item as a replica copy etc. is not allowed under Ebay rules. Having said that it does not mean Ebay checks items for this and suggest that people on this forum alert Ebay of replica items that are listed that do not comply with their guidelines. Maybe they may get the message that Ebay should inforce their listing rules..We live in hope.

Degrease coin with acetone or similar and leave in an oak cabinet for 6 months to a year and examine after that time. Repeat if not toned until coin re-tones. I have heard others say leave out in the weather until coin re-tones.

1937 Proof Set 3d Coins

Checked it out myself the circulation 3d is completely different to the Maundy 3d issue which follows the issue of the previous reign. Sorry to ask a silly question. -

Thanks for answering the question I was asking. Perhaps I should shell out and purchase a 1937 set.and I would see the difference. -
1937 Proof Set 3d Coins
ozjohn replied to ozjohn's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I think the 3d Maundy and 3d circulation were the same coin. -
I was looking at a 1937 proof set for sale which contains both the Maundy 3d and the normal 3d as well s the new brass issue. My question is what is the difference between the two silver issues and if the same why include two 3d silver coins in the set?. This was the case in the 1911 proof set that included the Maundy 1d, 2d,3d &4d coins but no extra 3d.

Hi Paulus, As I have said I am learning to photograph coins. Here is an example of a shiny coin. It was taken under the same conditions as before but lacks the lustre and consistency you have managed to achieve. Any tips would be appreciated.

I know everyone has their own ideas on this topic and I have been trying to obtain acceptable photos for some time. Finally I have found something that seems to work. The coin below was photographed by a Lumix DMC-TZ20 camera without any illumination save the light in the room being a small table lamp which was shadowed where the coin was situated by my printer. The Lumix was mounted on an Aldi Maginon tripod and set on IA focused on the coin to fill as much of the field as possible. The photo was taken using the 10 s. delay to avoid movement. The f stop was 6.4 and shutter speed 1/15 s.. I have tried before with extra illumination and using the macro setting which proved unsatisfactory with bright highlights on parts of the coin and poor depth of field

Another gem.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1905-1-2-half-Crown-Rare-Coin-2-6-king-edward-VII-commemorative-issue-esc-750-/152589663252?hash=item23870d7c14:g:a98AAOSwbiFZRWLY I suppose the seller says it's a repro and I don't think it would fool anyone but it's a fake and not marked as such.

I always used to look at the change in the 60s and sort out the silver and half silver coins. The oldest I ever found was an 1849 godless florin which I still have. This was in the days when it was illegal to have more than 8 sovereigns without a B of E license to collect them.

Perhaps there is something in Silvo & Goddard's silver cloths that makes you use more of the product ?. As for coins I keep my surplus coins in an old 18th C oak flight of draws and they seem to tone more quickly in there rather than elsewhere. Perhaps there is something in the oak that tones coins.

This one doesn't look right to me. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/One-florin-coin-1870-/332237753828?hash=item4d5ae9cde4:g:InsAAOSwEHpZKHvk

I'm forever polishing of the tarnish from the two silver spoons. The last time was about a month ago. If only they were coins.
