  1. whats the story with the coin anyways? it a known reproduction/someone has rubbed off the WRL? I managed to save this one from unknowing customers a while ago(now i am restricted buying things for a few months though ) i feel a responsibility to do things like this as the missus bought a liz shilling WRL for me last Christmas she apparently paid £100+ for. this one was "This is not a fake coin - I don't sell fake coins. This is a silver hammered coin of charles I. If you want to withdraw from the sell then thats ok - but please don't suggest that I sell fake items - look at feedback and you will see that I sell alot of genuine hammered coins." and when i told the seller to get out the electron microscope to spot the R on the reverse "Wow - I can't believe that - I am so sorry. I bought this from Birmingham Coin Fair and had it assessed and a card written up by someone who has a collection of Hammered coins and none of us noticed this on the coin until you have just bought it to my attention."
  2. Very much depends on what you want! Yes, Brooker is a good overview of a collection assembled over many years by an enthusiast! 1300 coins is it(?) pretty much all illustrated (B&W) with provenances and weights and short appendices on the pyx (which yields the dates the various privy marks were used) and provenances (which I have then used to track down auction catalogues of interest!) Tower and provincial/obsidional issues are all covered. Only proviso is that Brooker was keen on things like legend variations so collected some poorer examples just because they were different and he liked some rarities which are therefore over-represented and make you think they were commoner than they actually are! Then there are specialised publications on various denominations. The BNJ published several for example by Grant Francis on the various Tower mint issues which largely established the classifications. Michael Sharp's paper on Tower mint shillings (which also touched on those issued at Aberystwyth) is the basis for the numbering system used by many shilling collectors. All available online: http://www.britnumsoc.org/publications/Digital%20BNJ.shtml Halfcrowns are covered by Bull's series(!) of books which go into great detail. As does Roy Osborne's 1984 paper (BNJ again) on Tower coin varieties. More readable is Beasley's Coins and Medals of the English Civil War. Finally (probably not actually!) George Boon wrote a book on the Aberystwyth silver mines which touches on the coinage. Amongst other things! Not sure about gold as it's not an area I've looked at. Again I'd start with the BNJ maybe? And of course I'm always happy to help. I've learnt as much, if not more, from talking to other collectors as from books. . Nice one thanks(from the sidelines here as not my topic ) was going to buy the journals the other day but i am so cheap i waited to see if i could get them cheaper than a fiver, guess £0 is less than a fiver

  8. nice one quite a feat im impressed not to pry too much but what coins were you able to track that far back?
  9. how many auctions did the poor thing go in since then?
  10. thanks for all the help with this tracked it back to 2003 and to Dr James Davidson. How would i go about looking for it before then? is that where a hoard of catalogues comes in handy? In persoal experience how far back is it possible to track an item just using online resources? Also sorry for all the questions but whats the furthest back you guys/gals have personally tracked a coin?
  11. that's crazy thanks! thought i had checked Spink for this obviously not as thorough as i thought found the price for the DNW one but what's the possibility of getting a PDF of the catalogue? how far back did DNW offer PDF catalogues? thanks for the help didn't think i would get any results
  12. and the second is my Scottish Unite(which i got off the flea bay and dont really know where to start looking for it) Its a pretty uniquely shaped and easily identifiable hammered so should techically be able to find it? also is there any online resources available to go through shipwreck recoveries? ive looked at the detecting and http://www.wrecksite.eu/ but they dont seem to tell you what they found on the ships that are recovered(even the paid service doesnt seem to have it) are there catalogues for this too? thanks for any help
  13. thanks for the help I am looking for 2 different coins, the First one i know to be an H.M.S Association(1707) wreck coin and can possibly have a sale date of at the earliest July 14th,1969 (Sotheby & Co.) link to catalogue i found for sale This was really the one that got me thinking about provenance searching as it would be the easiest to look for the history of(its been in the sea for ~250 years before that i am certain of )
  14. Having a fairly unique and relatively easily identifiable(hammered mainly) how does one go about searching the provenance of the coin? does this necessarily require the last hundred years of catalogues or is there an easier method? thanks
  15. thanks for your help have thought about breaking them up but nowhere near got that much time to do all that work think ill just sell individual sets the £5 coins unfortunately are all loose in capsules so reducing their value a bit. thanks for your help again
  16. depends what language your garage speaks
  17. Just picking your brains if you don't mind Basically i have a complete set of proof sets from 1971 to 2010 as well as a complete set of £5 coins from 1990 to 2013(from my humble beginnings of coin collecting so forgive me ) and was wondering what the best way to sell them would be. i have thought about putting them as auction on ebay but the prices seem to vary so much and using an auction house for this seems to be even worse than ebay. wondering if anyone has any experience with this sort of thing and what would be the best way about going about this was? sell them as a lot on ebay (Buy it Now separating the £5 and proof sets) or individually? thanks for any help with this, been clogging up my house for 2 years now

  25. ha spoke too soon "Hello, Thank you for contacting eBay Customer Service regarding the full sovereign (item# 221378387980) that you have purchased from "frost1653" and I'm sorry to hear that you are having an issue with this transaction. I understand how disappointing it is when you expected to receive a phone but when it arrives, you just found out that it was just an empty package and you're concerned as your seller is not offering you a resolution. I appreciate the fact that you have exerted effort to rectify the issue with your trading partner by trying to communicate with them. I know how discouraging it can be on your part when you've waited for the item to arrive yet things like this happen. Let me take this opportunity to explain how we can sort this issue out. I have carefully reviewed your account and I'd like you to know that on the day you've opened a case for this transaction, we have sent an email notification to your seller advising them that they have an opened case and we have asked them to provide a resolution to you. We have informed them to offer you a partial or full refund (that covers the item cost and original postage) for the item you ordered or a replacement item and I am so sorry to hear that they have failed to do anything that we had recommended. Rest assured that this is very few and far between on eBay. Moving forward to the case you filed, I know how very important it is for you to have this matter settled. I'd like you to know that in order for us to continue with the investigation of your case, we'll need you to make an online report with the National Fraud and Internet Crime Reporting Centre, Action Fraud. We are always happy to help you as you are valuable to us that is why I have therefore placed this case on hold for 5 days or until 11th of March, 2014 to give you an ample time to provide us an action fraud number as well as photos that you received an empty package. Here's how you can file your report online: 1. Go to http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud 2. Click on Report a fraud 3. Click on Financial and online fraud 4. Fill in the form and click on Submit 5. Send us the reference number you'll get after completing the report. Kindly understand that you need to answer this email with the requested reference number within the given timeframe to ensure that you receive a refund. In addition to this, I strongly encourage you to report almost any issues you have with sellers when you find them abusing you by any means as we don't tolerate members with this kind of behaviour as this breaches our policy. We take your reports very seriously and even if not all action is visible on the site, I can guarantee you that this action have negative effect on their account and at the same time, will be recorded towards them that may lead to issuing the member a temporary suspension, an indefinite suspension or terminating the member's account. Here's how to report a member: 1. Log in to ebay.co.uk 2. Hover over Customer Support on the top right of your screen and select Customer Support from the drop down 3. Choose the tab Contact eBay 4. This will then bring you to a page detailing three main topics: Buying, Selling and My account 5. Select the topic that best describes your issue and then click on Report a member From there, the site will explain exactly how to report another member based on your reason for doing so. It's important to get your report to the correct department to ensure that it gets processed. I trust this information is helpful and we look forward to your response.
